Italy Eyes TB3 Drones for Carrier Cavour

In a move that could reshape the future of naval warfare in Europe, the Italian Navy is preparing to integrate advanced unmanned combat drones into its flagship aircraft carrier operations. The plan to deploy the Bayraktar TB3 on the ITS Cavour is not just a technological upgrade—it signals a decisive shift toward hybrid air wings where manned and unmanned systems operate side by side, redefining how maritime power is projected in modern conflict zones. 

At the center of this transformation is the Bayraktar TB3, a navalised unmanned combat aerial vehicle designed specifically for short-deck carrier operations. Unlike traditional drones, the TB3 is engineered to take off and land on ski-jump aircraft carriers like the Cavour, enabling seamless integration into existing naval infrastructure. 

What makes the TB3 particularly disruptive is its ability to deliver both surveillance and strike capabilities. With long-endurance missions and precision-guided payload options, the drone can maintain persistent presence over contested maritime zones reducing the operational burden on expensive fighter jets while expanding mission flexibility. 

The ITS Cavour, already a cornerstone of Italy’s naval power, is designed to operate advanced fighter jets like the F-35B while supporting multi-role missions ranging from combat to humanitarian operations. The addition of TB3 drones introduces a new operational layer, transforming the vessel into a hybrid platform capable of sustained intelligence, surveillance, and precision strike missions. 

This evolution reflects a broader trend in global naval strategy moving away from purely manned aviation toward more cost-effective, scalable, and persistent unmanned systems. For Italy, a country heavily dependent on maritime trade and energy routes, such advancements are critical in ensuring long-term strategic relevance in increasingly contested waters. 

Europe has long lagged behind in deploying carrier-based unmanned combat systems, largely due to high development costs and technological complexity. Italy’s interest in the TB3 positions it as a potential first mover within the region, bridging a critical capability gap while leveraging proven drone technology developed by Türkiye’s Baykar. 

The collaboration with Italian defense giant Leonardo further strengthens the initiative, indicating a growing industrial partnership that could shape future defense procurement models across Europe. This strategic alignment not only accelerates adoption but also enhances interoperability within NATO frameworks. 

Beyond the technical specifications, this development highlights a deeper transformation in how naval forces will operate in the coming decades. Unmanned systems like the TB3 are emerging as force multipliers capable of extending operational reach, reducing risks to personnel, and enabling round-the-clock mission execution in high-threat environments. 

As Italy pushes forward with this initiative, the integration of drones on aircraft carriers could soon become the norm rather than the exception. The Cavour’s next chapter may well define the blueprint for future European naval aviation, where agility, endurance, and smart warfare systems take center stage in shaping dominance at sea.
