Boeing Engineers Reject Contract, Authorize Strike as Wage Dispute Escalates

Post by : Saif

Boeing engineers and technical workers have overwhelmingly rejected a proposed four-year contract, increasing the possibility of a strike that could further disrupt the aircraft manufacturer's operations.

Members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, known as SPEEA, voted against the agreement while also giving their negotiating team authority to declare a strike when the current contract expires on October 6.

Around 17,000 Boeing white-collar employees are represented by the union. Engineers rejected the proposed agreement by 64%, while approximately 72% of technical workers voted against it.

No new negotiations between Boeing and SPEEA have been scheduled so far.

Boeing Begins Strike Contingency Planning

Boeing said it was disappointed by the vote and has begun implementing a contingency plan in preparation for a possible work stoppage.

The company said it had planned to invest additional funds in its SPEEA-represented workforce but would instead redirect those resources toward preparing for a potential strike.

A strike could create additional challenges for Boeing as the company works to advance certification programs for its 737 MAX 10 and 777-9 aircraft. Both programs have already experienced significant delays.

SPEEA's negotiating team plans to survey its members to determine what changes could make a revised four-year agreement acceptable.

Union members have said they want stronger long-term career opportunities at Boeing rather than simply maintaining their existing positions.

Workers Raise Concerns Over Wages

Several employees who opposed the agreement said the proposed pay increases were not sufficient to match the rising cost of living in the Seattle area.

The contract proposal included inflation-linked increases capped at 3%, along with raises based on individual performance and other company-determined factors.

Some workers argued that the inflation cap could leave their salaries falling behind living costs. Consumer prices in the Seattle area increased 4.5% over the year, according to US government data released in July.

Boeing has argued that its proposal would have represented the largest wage increase for SPEEA members in four decades.

Strike Could Add Pressure on Boeing

SPEEA has not negotiated a new contract for its Northwest members with Boeing since 2012, although workers approved contract extensions in 2016 and 2020.

Engineers and technical workers negotiate with Boeing together but vote separately on contract proposals.

A SPEEA strike would be significant for Boeing. Union members last went on strike for 40 days in 2000.

Boeing also faced a major labor disruption in 2024 when around 33,000 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers went on strike for seven weeks, bringing commercial aircraft production in the Seattle area to a halt.

With the latest contract rejected and strike authorization approved, Boeing now faces renewed labor uncertainty as it attempts to maintain production and move forward with delayed aircraft programs.
