Airbus Softens Return-to-Office Plan After Union Protests

Post by : Saif

Airbus has softened its plan to require white-collar employees to work from the office four days a week after protests and strikes by unions, particularly in Spain.

People familiar with the matter said managers have been given permission to allow employees to continue existing arrangements under which they work from home an average of two days each week. This effectively puts on hold a planned requirement that would have limited remote work to one day per week.

Airbus said it remains committed to increasing employees' presence at its workplaces but acknowledged the need to introduce the changes more gradually.

“Our objective remains the same,” an Airbus spokesperson said, explaining that greater on-site presence was intended to improve teamwork, knowledge sharing and decision-making.

Protests Spread Across Airbus Facilities

The change follows several weeks of labour unrest at Airbus facilities in Spain. Workers have staged intermittent strikes since July over remote working and other employment issues.

Employees in France and Britain have also held sporadic protests over plans to increase office attendance.

In Spain, unions said around 40% of Airbus's 14,000 employees had participated in strikes. Their demands include maintaining flexible working arrangements, as well as changes involving transportation, paid leave and salaries.

Despite the industrial action, aircraft production has not been significantly affected because the protests have mainly involved white-collar and supporting functions.

CEO Pushed for Greater Office Presence

Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury had strongly backed the return-to-office initiative.

In a message to employees in June, Faury said remote working had been important during the COVID-19 pandemic when reducing physical contact was necessary. He argued that circumstances had changed and that greater face-to-face interaction was needed to improve the transfer of skills.

The company is currently dealing with record demand for aircraft while preparing new products. Airbus also has a large number of relatively new employees who joined after the pandemic.

French unions estimate that between 25% and one-third of Airbus employees have joined the company during the past three years.

Spanish Unions Prepare Further Action

Labour tensions remain high in Spain. Three unions have called for a three-hour stoppage on Monday, when workers are expected to vote on whether to support a longer strike.

The intensity of the protests has reportedly raised concerns within Airbus leadership about how the situation has been managed locally.

The dispute also reflects wider changes in workplace expectations. Many younger employees place greater importance on flexibility and work-life balance, making remote and hybrid working an important factor in recruitment.

Airbus and other aerospace companies are competing with technology and artificial intelligence businesses for younger talent, where higher salaries and flexible working arrangements can make recruitment more attractive.

Airbus Seeks Gradual Transition

Airbus's decision to slow its return-to-office plan indicates that the company is seeking to balance management's demand for greater workplace interaction with employees' preference for flexible arrangements.

The company maintains that working together in person can improve knowledge transfer and operational efficiency, but union resistance has made an immediate shift to four days in the office more difficult.

For now, employees who already work from home around two days a week may continue under those arrangements, giving Airbus more time to negotiate and implement any future changes.
