Thailand Orders 15-Day Halt on Major Construction Projects After Fatal Accidents

Post by : Saif

Thailand has taken urgent action following two deadly construction accidents that shook the nation this week. The country’s Transport Ministry announced a 15-day halt on 14 major construction projects involving Italian-Thai Development. The suspension also applies to all large-scale projects overseen by the ministry. The move aims to conduct thorough safety inspections and prevent further accidents.

The accidents occurred during the construction of elevated highways and other infrastructure projects. In one incident, a crane collapsed in Samut Sakhon province, crushing two vehicles and causing multiple injuries. Thankfully, emergency responders were on the scene quickly, but the tragic events have highlighted serious safety concerns in the construction industry.

Italian-Thai Development, one of Thailand’s largest construction companies, is involved in numerous infrastructure projects across the country. The company’s role in the recent accidents has prompted authorities to temporarily halt its work to review safety standards, inspect equipment, and ensure compliance with regulations.

A Transport Ministry official stated that the suspension period will allow inspectors to conduct careful checks and implement stricter safety measures. “Our priority is the safety of workers and the public,” the official said. “We must prevent such tragedies from happening again.”

Thailand has experienced rapid infrastructure growth in recent years, with large-scale highway, railway, and urban development projects underway. While this growth boosts the economy, it also increases the need for strict safety enforcement. Experts have called on the government and construction companies to maintain higher standards for machinery, worker training, and site supervision.

Local residents and commuters expressed relief at the suspension, saying that public safety should come before deadlines and profits. “It is tragic that people lost their lives,” said one Samut Sakhon resident. “We hope this pause will make construction safer for everyone.”

The Transport Ministry’s decision serves as a reminder that safety cannot be compromised in the race to complete large infrastructure projects. Authorities are expected to release inspection results and announce corrective measures once the 15-day halt ends. Companies found violating safety protocols could face fines, sanctions, or further suspensions.

Thailand’s government has shown that it is willing to act decisively when public safety is at risk. The recent accidents underscore the importance of strong oversight in construction, careful planning, and accountability for companies involved in large projects.

The 15-day suspension is a necessary step toward ensuring that workers, commuters, and the public can trust that construction sites are safe and secure.
