Mumbai Metro Line 4 gets driverless trains and signalling setup deal

Post by : Armust Desk

Mumbai, one of the busiest cities in India, is preparing for a major step forward in its public transport system. The much-awaited Metro Line 4, also called the Green Line, will now move closer to reality after a big contract was awarded for trains, signalling systems, and maintenance. This decision promises to bring advanced technology, faster services, and safer travel to lakhs of commuters who struggle daily with heavy traffic on Mumbai’s roads.

The project is being carried out under the guidance of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). To deliver this massive task, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been selected as the main contractor. L&T has chosen Alstom, one of the world’s leading train and signalling companies, as its technology partner. Together, they will bring to Mumbai modern trains that can run without drivers, along with smart control systems to manage them.

What the Deal Covers

The agreement signed between the companies includes:

  • The supply of 39 driverless trainsets, each made up of six coaches.

  • The setting up of a state-of-the-art CBTC signalling system.

  • Maintenance and technical support for a period of five years after the trains are delivered.

This is not a small investment. It is a project worth several thousand crores of rupees, showing the government’s commitment to upgrading Mumbai’s transport infrastructure. Once completed, the Green Line will change how people travel between Mumbai and Thane, cutting down time and providing a smoother, cleaner mode of travel.

Who Is Behind the Project

The work involves three main players.

  • MMRDA, which is responsible for developing the Mumbai Metro network.

  • L&T, the Indian engineering giant, will oversee and manage the project on the ground.

  • Alstom, a global leader in trains, metro cars, and signalling, will provide the actual trainsets and the advanced control systems.

This partnership combines the strengths of local experience and international technology, ensuring that Mumbai gets the best results.

The New Trains

The trains that will run on Metro Line 4 are called Metropolis driverless trains. These trains are modern, smart, and designed with passenger comfort and safety in mind. Each train set will have six cars, which means that in total, 234 metro cars will be delivered for this line.

The new trains will include:

  • Spacious and air-cooled interiors,

  • Areas for wheelchairs to ensure accessibility for all,

  • Racks for bicycles to support eco-friendly travel,

  • Safe braking and cybersecurity systems,

  • Modern passenger information displays.

These features make the trains not just modern but also future-ready. They are designed to give passengers a safe, fast, and comfortable ride while keeping in mind the needs of all groups of people, including those with disabilities.

Smart Signalling System

One of the most advanced features of this project is the signalling system. The trains will use a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system with full automation, known as Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4).

This means the trains will run without human drivers, completely controlled by computers and monitored from control centres. Such systems are already used in some of the world’s busiest metro networks, and Mumbai will soon join that league.

Benefits of CBTC include:

  • Shorter waiting times because trains can run more frequently,

  • Smooth operations that reduce delays,

  • Lower energy use,

  • Improved safety,

  • Less traffic congestion in the city, and

  • Lower pollution levels due to reduced dependence on cars and buses.

The main control will be handled from the Operations Control Centre (OCC) at the Mandale depot. As a backup, another control centre will be located at Mogharpada. This ensures the metro will run smoothly around the clock.

Made in India

The project also supports India’s “Make in India” campaign. Most of the work will be done in India itself, creating jobs and supporting local industries.

  • The design will be prepared by Alstom’s engineering centre in Bengaluru.

  • The trains will be manufactured at Alstom’s factory in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

  • The propulsion systems will be made in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

  • The bogies will come from Savli in Gujarat.

The Sri City factory is one of the largest in Asia and can make up to 480 metro cars every year. It has already supplied trains for projects across India and also to countries abroad. This ensures that Mumbai’s metro trains will be proudly made in India with world-class standards.

Why Metro Line 4 is Important

The Green Line, or Metro Line 4, is one of the most important metro routes for Mumbai. It will cover a distance of 35.3 kilometres, running from Wadala in central Mumbai to Kasarvadavali in Thane. The line will have 32 stations, connecting major residential and commercial areas.

This line will link to other important transport routes, such as the Eastern Express Highway, Monorail, and other Metro lines. This means passengers will be able to switch easily between different modes of travel, making journeys faster and more convenient.

For Mumbai’s residents, this will mean:

  • Reduced travel time between Mumbai and Thane,

  • Less road congestion,

  • A cleaner and greener transport option,

  • A big relief from the crowded local trains and buses.

Extra Features Included

Apart from the trains and signalling system, the contract also includes:

  • Telecommunications systems for smooth communication,

  • Platform screen doors at stations for safety,

  • Depot machinery and equipment to maintain the trains in top condition.

All these additions will help create a modern and fully integrated metro system for the city.

Maintenance and Support

Alstom will not just deliver the trains but will also provide five years of maintenance and technical support. This will make sure that the trains and systems stay in good condition and continue to work reliably every day. Maintenance support will include regular checks, spare parts, and quick solutions to any technical problems.

A Step Towards the Future

The award of this contract marks an important step in the journey of Mumbai’s metro network. The Green Line will not only improve how people travel but also support local industries, create thousands of jobs, and help the environment by reducing vehicle pollution.

In the coming years, as the metro expands and more lines open, Mumbai will have a world-class urban transport system. With driverless trains, smart signalling, and modern passenger facilities, Metro Line 4 will be a shining example of how technology can improve everyday life in a busy city.
