China Eastern Airlines has announced plans to purchase 25 Airbus A330neo widebody aircraft in a deal valued at approximately $9.4 billion, marking another major investment in its international expansion strategy. The new aircraft will strengthen the airline's long-haul fleet and support the launch of additional overseas routes from Shanghai Pudong International Airport over the coming years.
According to the airline, the purchase agreement was signed with Airbus in Shanghai, with deliveries scheduled to take place in phases between 2029 and 2033.
China Eastern Expands Its Long-Haul Fleet
The airline said the new A330neo aircraft will primarily serve long-haul international routes from Shanghai Pudong Airport, helping increase flight frequencies and launch new destinations across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and other global markets.
The expansion reflects China Eastern's strategy to meet growing demand for international air travel as global passenger traffic continues to recover.
Officials believe the additional aircraft will strengthen Shanghai's position as one of Asia's leading international aviation hubs.
Deal Worth $9.4 Billion at List Prices
China Eastern said the order has a catalogue value of approximately $9.35 billion, based on Airbus' January 2025 list prices.
However, the airline confirmed that the actual purchase price will be significantly lower, as it negotiated a substantial discount with Airbus. Large commercial aircraft manufacturers typically offer discounted prices for bulk orders placed by major airlines.
The company added that the agreed pricing is more favorable than in some of its previous aircraft purchases.
Aircraft Deliveries Planned Between 2029 and 2033
Airbus is expected to begin delivering the aircraft in 2029, with all 25 jets scheduled to be handed over by 2033.
The phased delivery schedule will allow the airline to gradually modernize its fleet while matching aircraft capacity with future passenger demand.
During the same period, China Eastern plans to retire at least 10 older Airbus A330 aircraft, replacing them with the more advanced and fuel-efficient A330neo models.
Why the Airbus A330neo?
The Airbus A330neo is one of the world's most advanced widebody passenger aircraft.
It offers several improvements over the previous A330 generation, including:
Better fuel efficiency
Lower operating costs
Longer flight range
Reduced carbon emissions
Improved passenger comfort
Advanced aerodynamic wing design
The aircraft is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, which provide improved performance while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
These features make the aircraft well suited for long-distance international routes.
Second Major Airbus Order in 2026
The latest purchase follows another major agreement signed by China Eastern earlier this year.
In March 2026, the airline announced an order for 101 Airbus A320neo aircraft, valued at approximately $15.8 billion based on catalogue prices.
Together, the two aircraft orders demonstrate the airline's confidence in the long-term recovery of both domestic and international aviation markets.
Airbus Strengthens Its Position in China
The agreement also represents another important success for Airbus in the Chinese aviation market.
China is expected to remain one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally, with Airbus forecasting annual passenger traffic growth of around 5 percent over the next two decades.
As Chinese airlines continue expanding their fleets, Airbus is strengthening its presence by supplying modern, fuel-efficient aircraft that support lower operating costs and environmental sustainability.
How the Purchase Will Be Financed
China Eastern said the aircraft acquisition will be financed through a combination of:
Internal company funds
Bank loans
Bond issuances
Other financing arrangements
The airline stated that the phased payment schedule is not expected to have any significant impact on its financial stability or daily operations.
Separately, the company announced that one of its overseas subsidiaries plans to issue bonds worth up to 2.8 billion yuan (around $412 million) to support its financing needs.
What This Means for Global Aviation
The latest aircraft order highlights the aviation industry's growing optimism about long-haul international travel.
With 25 new Airbus A330neo aircraft joining its fleet over the next several years, China Eastern will be better positioned to expand global connectivity, improve operational efficiency, and offer passengers more international travel options.
The agreement also reinforces Airbus' strong presence in China's rapidly expanding aviation market and reflects continued airline investment in next-generation, fuel-efficient aircraft.
