Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has officially launched its new Racco electric mini-car in Japan, marking its entry into the country's highly competitive kei car segment and intensifying competition with domestic automakers.
The Shenzhen-based company hopes the affordable model will boost its presence in Japan after passenger vehicle sales fell short of expectations following its market entry in 2023.
The BYD Racco carries a starting price of ¥1.95 million before taxes and government subsidies.
According to the company, buyers will be able to purchase the entry-level model for less than ¥2 million after applicable incentives. However, Nissan Motor's Sakura, Japan's best-selling electric mini-car, remains less expensive for customers after subsidies because it qualifies for higher government support.
The Racco offers a driving range of up to 320 kilometers (199 miles) on a single charge and becomes the first electric kei car equipped with sliding rear doors, a feature widely preferred by Japanese families.
BYD says the vehicle has been designed specifically to meet the needs of Japan's compact vehicle market.
BYD Auto Japan President Atsuki Tofukuji said the company aims to secure 10,000 orders for the Racco by the end of 2026.
He acknowledged that the target reflects the company's confidence in the new model rather than detailed market forecasts, adding that sustained dealership sales could help achieve long-term growth.
Industry analysts say BYD may introduce promotional campaigns or additional features if customer demand falls below expectations.
Kei cars, or light vehicles, account for roughly one-third of Japan's automobile market and have traditionally been dominated by domestic manufacturers such as Honda Motor, Suzuki Motor, and Nissan.
By entering this segment, BYD is attempting to strengthen its brand recognition in one of the world's most competitive automotive markets.
BYD had sold just over 7,400 passenger vehicles in Japan by the end of 2025 since entering the market in early 2023.
The launch of the Racco highlights the growing ambitions of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers as they expand globally while increasing competitive pressure on established Japanese automakers, particularly in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle sector.
