U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has officially closed its investigation into approximately 441,000 Honda Odyssey minivans after Honda issued a safety recall to address concerns about unexpected side airbag deployment.
The investigation covered certain 2018 to 2022 Honda Odyssey models following reports that side airbags deployed without a crash while the vehicles were being driven.
Why the Investigation Was Opened
The NHTSA launched a preliminary evaluation in October 2025 after receiving multiple complaints from vehicle owners.
According to the reports, the side curtain airbags deployed unexpectedly while the minivans were in motion. Some drivers said the airbags activated after the vehicle hit potholes or rough sections of the road, even though no collision had occurred.
Safety officials began examining whether the issue posed a risk to drivers and passengers.
Honda Issued a Recall
In April 2026, Honda announced a recall covering certain 2018–2022 Honda Odyssey minivans to fix the airbag problem. Following the recall, the NHTSA concluded that the company's corrective action addressed the safety concern and decided to close its preliminary investigation. Vehicle owners were notified about the recall in late May 2026.
Warranty Claims and Injury Reports
Honda informed the safety regulator that, as of April 2, 2026, it had received:
Although several people reported minor injuries linked to unexpected airbag deployment, no fatalities have been associated with the defect.
What Honda Owners Should Do
Owners of affected Honda Odyssey vehicles are encouraged to check whether their minivan is included in the recall.
Eligible vehicles can be inspected and repaired at authorized Honda dealerships at no cost to the owner.
Drivers who have not yet responded to the recall notice should schedule the repair as soon as possible to ensure the vehicle meets current safety standards.
Why This Recall Matters
Unexpected airbag deployment can distract drivers and increase the risk of accidents, especially when it occurs without a collision.
The recall is intended to prevent future incidents and improve passenger safety by correcting the defect in affected vehicles. The closure of the investigation also reflects the NHTSA's standard process, where regulatory action is concluded once a manufacturer implements an acceptable remedy.
