Thousands of US Flights Delayed as Shutdown Hits Travel

Post by : Meena Rani

Travelers in the United States faced severe disruptions on Sunday, with thousands of flights delayed or cancelled, marking the most significant impact since the start of the government shutdown. Airlines were forced to cut operations at 40 major airports, leaving many passengers stranded or facing long waits.

Flight-tracking platform FlightAware reported that by 10 p.m. ET on Sunday, over 10,000 flights within, into, or out of the US were delayed, and more than 3,200 flights were cancelled. This level of disruption represents the highest since the shutdown began, affecting millions of passengers across the country.

Delta Air Lines was particularly impacted, with 52 percent of its mainline flights either delayed or cancelled. The airline struggled to maintain operations amid the staffing shortages and government-imposed reductions, which forced adjustments to schedules and capacity at key airports.

The current flight disruptions are part of a broader reduction in flight capacity ordered by the government due to staffing shortages. The Trump administration mandated a 4 percent cut in domestic flights at 40 major airports starting last Friday, with potential increases to 10 percent next week if the shutdown continues.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that the situation could worsen significantly if the government deadlock persists. He told CNN that flight operations could shrink to a “trickle”, raising serious concerns for travelers ahead of the busy holiday travel season.

Passengers experienced long waits, missed connections, and crowded terminals, highlighting the strain on the US aviation system during the shutdown. Airlines have been adjusting schedules and notifying travelers, but staffing shortages continue to hamper smooth operations at affected airports.

With the government shutdown ongoing, the airline industry expects further delays and cancellations in the coming days, potentially affecting millions more travelers. Passengers are advised to check flight status in advance and plan for extended travel times as the crisis unfolds.
