LATAM Airlines Group, Latin America’s largest airline group, has officially signed an order for 24 Embraer E195-E2 jets, with purchase options for 50 additional aircraft. Deliveries are slated to begin in the second half of 2026, initially serving LATAM Airlines Brazil and potentially other group affiliates.
This decision follows recent evaluations of smaller jets from both Airbus and Embraer, amid ongoing discussions about optimizing LATAM’s fleet for regional markets.
Targeting South America’s “White Space”
LATAM CEO Roberto Alvo highlighted the region’s untapped potential during the CAPA Airline Leader Summit Latin America & Caribbean on Sept. 9. Alvo described South America as “underdeveloped,” with ample opportunities in underserved markets, often referred to as “white space.”
“Regional jets are one way to tackle that white space,” Alvo noted. He also emphasized the continued utility of the airline’s Airbus A319 fleet, pointing out their flexibility and mostly depreciated status, allowing deployment wherever needed. LATAM currently operates 39 A319S in service.
Strategic Move Amid Regional Competition
The order positions LATAM alongside its Brazilian rival Azul, which operates 24 Embraer E195-E2S (six inactive) and has leveraged the jets to expand into secondary Brazilian markets. Azul’s capacity growth is planned to slow from 11% to 3.8% annually between 2025 and 2029 as part of its Chapter 11 restructuring plan.
LATAM’s investment in the E195-E2S is seen as a strategic effort to capture market share in regional routes and to complement its existing fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft.
Fleet Details and Operational Plans
The addition of the E-Jets introduces a new aircraft type to LATAM’s operations. The airline currently operates a fleet of 362 aircraft, consisting of:
283 Airbus narrowbodies
3 Airbus widebodies under short-term lease
56 Boeing widebodies
20 Boeing freighters
With the E195-E2S, LATAM expects to add 35 new destinations to its network, expanding its reach beyond the current 160 destinations.
Embraer’s Recent Success
LATAM’s order continues a strong streak for Embraer in the regional jet market. U.S. carrier Avelo recently signed for 50 E195-E2S with options for 50 more, while SkyWest placed an order for 60 E-175s during the Paris Air Show in June. These deals reflect growing global confidence in Embraer’s E-Jet E2 family for regional connectivity and operational efficiency.
