India's demand for alternative-fuel vehicles (AFVs), including electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid cars and compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, reached a record high in June 2026 as consumers increasingly turned to fuel-efficient options following petrol and diesel price hikes linked to the recent Iran conflict.
According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), alternative-fuel vehicles accounted for 40.35% of passenger vehicle (PV) retail sales in June, compared with around 38% in May. The sharp increase came after fuel prices were raised several times during May, prompting buyers to look for vehicles with lower running costs.
Fuel Price Hikes Influence Consumer Choices
The rise in demand follows the impact of the Iran war, which disrupted global oil markets and contributed to higher fuel prices in India. As petrol and diesel became more expensive, many customers shifted their preference towards vehicles powered by electricity, CNG and hybrid technology.
FADA President C.S. Vigneshwar said the latest figures indicate a strong consumer response to rising fuel costs but added that it remains to be seen whether the trend represents a temporary reaction or a long-term shift in buying behaviour.
"We need to watch whether this is an emotional knee-jerk reaction from customers or whether this growth is here to stay," Vigneshwar told Reuters.
Passenger Vehicle Sales Reach Record Levels
India's overall automobile market also recorded strong growth during June. Total vehicle retail sales increased by 21.8% year-on-year to a record 2.6 million units.
Passenger vehicle sales rose 28.6% compared to the same month last year, reaching 410,853 units, reflecting strong consumer demand despite higher fuel costs.
Among passenger vehicles sold in June:
Together, these alternative-fuel vehicles achieved their highest-ever share of India's passenger vehicle market.
Maruti Suzuki Reports Surge in CNG Bookings
India's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, also reported growing demand for CNG-powered vehicles. The company said bookings for its CNG models increased by 40% after the fuel price hikes announced in May.
The growing popularity of CNG vehicles reflects consumers' efforts to reduce daily fuel expenses while continuing to rely on conventional vehicle ownership.
Electric Two-Wheeler Segment Also Sets Record
The shift toward cleaner mobility was also visible in the two-wheeler market. According to FADA, electric two-wheelers accounted for 10.6% of total two-wheeler sales in June, marking the first time the segment crossed the 10% market share milestone.
Industry experts believe improving charging infrastructure, government incentives and rising fuel costs are encouraging more consumers to consider electric mobility.
Industry Watches Future Market Trends
Although global crude oil prices have eased from their peak levels following the Iran conflict, industry leaders believe it could take several months before supply chains and fuel markets return to complete stability.
Vigneshwar noted that while the worst impact of the crude oil shock appears to be over, the automotive industry may continue to face cost pressures for the next few quarters.
Dealers and manufacturers will now closely monitor whether consumer demand for alternative-fuel vehicles continues even if fuel prices stabilise in the coming months.
