UK Car Sales June 2026: New Vehicle Registrations Rise 11%, EVs Reach 30% Market Share

Post by : Saif

London, United Kingdom: The UK's new car market recorded strong growth in June 2026, with new vehicle registrations rising by 11% compared with the same month last year, according to preliminary data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The latest figures indicate continued recovery in the British automotive sector, supported by steady consumer demand and increasing interest in electric vehicles.

Electric Vehicles Continue to Gain Market Share

According to the preliminary SMMT data, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 30% of all new car registrations during June.

The growing share of electric vehicles reflects the UK's ongoing transition toward cleaner transportation as consumers increasingly choose zero-emission vehicles over conventional petrol and diesel models.

Industry analysts say the expansion of charging infrastructure, wider model availability and government-backed climate goals continue to support EV adoption across the country.

Final June Figures to Be Released by SMMT

The figures released on Sunday are preliminary estimates.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is expected to publish the final official June 2026 registration data later on Monday, providing a detailed breakdown of vehicle sales by manufacturer, fuel type and market segment.

The updated report will offer a clearer picture of the UK's automotive performance during the first half of 2026.

Positive Sign for the UK Automotive Industry

The increase in new car registrations is viewed as a positive indicator for Britain's automotive sector, which has faced challenges in recent years from supply chain disruptions, inflation, changing consumer demand and the industry's transition to electric mobility.

With electric vehicles now making up nearly one-third of new registrations, manufacturers continue to expand their EV portfolios as the UK moves toward its long-term emissions reduction targets.

The final SMMT report is expected to provide further insights into consumer buying trends and overall market performance.
