United States has announced a 25% tariff on certain imports from Brazil under Section 301 of the US Trade Act, marking a significant escalation in trade tensions between the two countries. The decision was announced by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who said the action follows a year-long investigation into Brazil's trade policies.
According to the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR), the investigation concluded that several Brazilian policies unfairly burden American businesses and workers.
US officials said the probe identified concerns related to digital trade, import tariffs, intellectual property protections, ethanol market access, and deforestation-related policies. The USTR argued that these issues created unfair conditions for US companies operating or trading with Brazil.
Greer said the new tariffs are intended to ensure that American businesses can compete on a level playing field while encouraging Brazil to address the identified concerns.
US officials said both countries held extensive trade negotiations over the past year, but the discussions failed to resolve key disputes. While announcing the tariffs, Greer stated that Washington remains open to future negotiations if Brazil is willing to address the outstanding issues.
The new measures make Brazil the first country to face tariffs under President Donald Trump's latest trade strategy using Section 301 of US trade law.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused the Brazilian government of failing to negotiate in good faith. He also criticised Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, claiming that political considerations had prevented an agreement that could have benefited both countries.
Brazil has not yet announced any retaliatory measures, but officials are expected to review the US decision before responding.

The tariffs are expected to affect thousands of Brazilian export products entering the US market. Analysts believe the move could increase trade tensions between Washington and Brasília while affecting businesses involved in agriculture, manufacturing, and industrial exports.
The United States has indicated it remains willing to continue discussions with Brazil despite implementing the new trade restrictions.
