United Airlines Profit Forecast Falls Short as Fuel Costs Surge

Post by : Saif

United Airlines has forecast fourth-quarter earnings well below Wall Street expectations as rising jet fuel prices threaten to reduce profits despite strong passenger demand and higher ticket prices. The US carrier expects fuel costs to remain elevated, creating fresh challenges for airlines heading into 2027.

The Chicago-based airline expects adjusted earnings of 50 cents to $1.50 per share for the quarter ending in December. Analysts had estimated average earnings of $1.76 per share, highlighting the financial pressure caused by higher operating expenses.

United's outlook shows how the airline industry is struggling to turn strong travel demand into higher profits. Although ticket prices have increased, fuel expenses have risen faster, reducing the benefits of stronger sales.

Higher Jet Fuel Costs Weigh on Earnings

United expects to pay around $4.80 per gallon for jet fuel during the fourth quarter. This estimate is approximately 45 cents per gallon above market expectations.

The difference could reduce earnings by about $1 per share, according to the airline's forecast. This cost pressure comes as airlines face uncertainty over global energy prices and the potential impact of the Iran war on fuel supplies and transportation costs.

Higher fuel expenses are forcing airlines to reconsider their pricing strategies and capacity plans. Carriers may need to increase fares further or limit the number of flights they operate to protect profit margins.

However, higher ticket prices also carry risks. If fares become too expensive, some travellers may reduce their trips or choose cheaper alternatives.

Alaska Airlines Also Warns of a Difficult Quarter

Alaska Air Group has also issued a weaker-than-expected earnings forecast, adding to concerns about the financial health of the airline sector.

The carrier expects an adjusted loss of $2 to $2.50 per share in the fourth quarter. Analysts had anticipated a loss of approximately $1.04 per share.

Alaska also expects its annual fuel bill to exceed its original budget by $1.8 billion. The company reported a 14% increase in third-quarter revenue, but its adjusted pretax profit margin fell to 1.1%, compared with 4.6% a year earlier.

These figures demonstrate that rising passenger revenue does not necessarily translate into stronger profitability when operating costs increase sharply.

United Reports Record Revenue but Lower Margins

United's third-quarter performance highlights the gap between rising sales and declining profitability. The airline recorded strong revenue growth, but additional spending on fuel absorbed nearly 70% of its revenue increase.

Its adjusted pretax profit margin dropped to 6.2%, down from 8% in the same period a year earlier.

Passenger demand remained strong across several parts of its business. United carried a record number of travellers, while revenue from business-class customers, premium cabins and basic economy tickets grew at double-digit rates.

The airline also generated more revenue without significantly expanding its flight capacity. Despite these positive results, higher fuel expenses continued to limit its earnings.

US Airfares Continue to Rise

Airline ticket prices across the United States have increased considerably as carriers attempt to offset higher operating expenses. US airfares rose by nearly 23% year over year during the seven months through September, according to government data.

Fuel spending has climbed even faster. US airlines spent $42.9 billion on fuel during the first eight months of 2026, an increase of $13.2 billion compared with the same period last year. This happened despite a slight decline in fuel consumption.

The figures underline the scale of the cost challenge facing carriers as they prepare their budgets for the coming year.

Airlines May Reduce Flight Growth in 2027

Airlines could face difficult decisions in 2027 if energy prices remain high. Further fare increases may help protect margins, but they could also weaken demand among price-sensitive passengers.

Reducing flight growth is another option. By limiting additional capacity, airlines may be able to support ticket prices and avoid adding flights that are less profitable.

The pressure is not limited to American carriers. Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary has warned that European airfares could increase by as much as 20% next year as higher fuel expenses and reduced airline capacity affect the market.

What United Airlines' Forecast Means for Travellers and Investors

United's earnings outlook highlights the challenges facing airlines as they balance passenger demand, ticket prices and fuel expenses. For investors, the key question is whether carriers can maintain profitability if energy costs remain elevated.

Travellers could face more expensive tickets if airlines pass additional expenses on to customers. Flight schedules and capacity may also change if companies decide to prioritise profitable routes.

United and Alaska Air are expected to discuss their financial results with analysts and investors on October 21. Their comments could provide further insight into fuel-price expectations, ticket pricing and airline growth plans for 2027.
