California’s electric vehicle rebate program has helped nearly 12,000 residents purchase new and used electric cars since launching in August 2026. The $270 million initiative, funded jointly by the state and participating automakers, aims to make electric vehicles more affordable as sales face pressure following the removal of federal incentives.
According to figures released by California on October 16, the program has supported purchases of 11,806 new electric vehicles and 132 used EVs. Around $70 million has been spent so far, leaving approximately $200 million in funding available.
How California’s EV Rebate Program Works
Signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in July, the scheme offers financial support to residents purchasing an electric vehicle for the first time.
Eligible buyers can receive:
The program has a total budget of $270 million, with $135.5 million provided by the state and the remaining $135.5 million contributed by participating automakers.
The initiative is intended to reduce the upfront cost of switching from petrol-powered cars to electric vehicles.
Tesla vehicles represent the largest share of purchases made through the rebate scheme. California reported that buyers purchased 5,658 Tesla vehicles under the program.
Other popular choices included approximately 1,700 Hyundai electric vehicles, nearly 1,400 Toyota models and around 1,100 electric vehicles from General Motors.
Several other manufacturers are participating, including Ford, Honda, Kia, Lexus, Lucid, Rivian, Subaru and Volvo. Nissan has also joined the program, while Mitsubishi Motors is expected to begin participating in November.
However, funding for Tesla models under the scheme has already been exhausted, according to the state. The remaining funds are available for eligible purchases from other participating manufacturers, subject to program rules and availability.
Although the rebate program has supported thousands of purchases, electric vehicles have lost some market share in California.
EVs accounted for 18% of all vehicle sales in the state through September 30, 2026. This compares with 23% in 2025 and 25% in 2024.
Sales have also faced pressure across the United States following the removal of federal incentives. In 2025, President Donald Trump signed legislation ending the federal tax credit of up to $7,500 for new electric vehicles and the credit of up to $4,000 for used EVs.
These changes have reduced financial support for American consumers considering electric cars. At the same time, global EV sales have benefited from factors including higher oil prices, which can make petrol-powered vehicles more expensive to operate.

California previously operated an EV rebate program that ended in 2023. Over a decade, that initiative spent $1.49 billion to support 586,000 electric vehicle purchases.
The state has also challenged federal actions affecting its vehicle-emission rules. California and several other states had adopted policies aimed at phasing out sales of new petrol-powered cars by 2035, but the Trump administration has moved to reverse those requirements.
Changes to regulatory credit rules have also reduced automakers’ need to purchase compliance credits from companies such as Tesla.
What the Rebate Program Means for EV Buyers
California’s latest initiative provides an alternative source of financial support for residents who may no longer qualify for federal EV tax credits. By reducing the purchase price of eligible vehicles, the scheme could help some households consider electric cars.
However, the decline in EV market share shows that rebates alone may not be enough to maintain earlier sales growth. Vehicle prices, charging access, running costs and consumer preferences will continue to influence demand.
