Japan's Strategic Oil Reserves Rise to 202 Days Despite Middle East Supply Risks

Post by : Saif

Japan's strategic crude oil reserves increased by the equivalent of three days of domestic consumption in July, reaching a total of 202 days of consumption, according to the country's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

The increase comes despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the prolonged Iran conflict, as Japan successfully secured alternative sources of crude oil to strengthen its energy security.

Oil Stockpiles Recover After Previous Declines

Japan's oil reserves had fallen steadily over recent months due to supply disruptions and market volatility.

According to METI:

  • Strategic reserves increased by three days in July.
  • Total reserves now equal 202 days of domestic consumption.
  • Stockpiles had declined by four days in June, five days in May, and 27 days in April.

The latest increase signals an improvement in Japan's ability to manage energy supplies amid continued uncertainty in global oil markets.

Alternative Supply Sources Strengthen Energy Security

Officials said Japan managed to offset supply risks by securing crude oil from alternative sources while maintaining stable domestic inventories.

The country's combined reserves include:

  • Government strategic petroleum reserves.
  • Private sector oil inventories.
  • Jointly held reserves with oil-producing countries.

As of August 1, these combined reserves stood at the equivalent of 202 days of national oil consumption.

No Additional Reserve Releases Planned

Japan has not announced any further releases from its strategic petroleum reserves since May, indicating that authorities currently consider supply conditions stable enough to maintain existing stock levels.

Officials continue to monitor developments in global energy markets and geopolitical risks that could affect future imports.

Japan Remains Dependent on Middle East Oil

Despite efforts to diversify energy supplies, Japan continues to rely heavily on the Middle East for its crude oil imports.

Government data shows that approximately 94% of Japan's crude oil imports in 2025 came from Middle Eastern producers, making regional stability a key factor in the country's long-term energy strategy.
