Malaysia's DAP to Vote on Government Role Amid Declining Public Support

Malaysia's Democratic Action Party (DAP), the largest party in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's ruling coalition, will decide on August 16 whether its leaders should continue serving in the federal government.

The decision will be made during the party's national congress, where thousands of delegates are expected to vote by secret ballot on the party's future role in the administration.

Electoral Setbacks Trigger Internal Review

The review comes after a series of disappointing election results for the ruling coalition. The coalition recently suffered its third consecutive regional election defeat, raising concerns about declining public support.

Among the most significant outcomes was the defeat of Transport Minister and DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke, who lost his long-held seat in the Negeri Sembilan state legislature after more than a decade.

Cabinet Participation Under Discussion

DAP currently holds a significant presence in Malaysia's federal government, with five cabinet ministers and seven deputy ministers.

Party members will vote on whether DAP should continue occupying these government positions for the remainder of the current parliamentary term.

Anthony Loke clarified that the vote concerns the party's participation in the government and does not affect its continued support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim or its membership in the Pakatan Harapan coalition.

Growing Political Challenges

The ruling coalition has faced criticism over its handling of corruption-related cases, racial and religious issues, and concerns surrounding the pace of promised political and institutional reforms.

Political analysts believe these issues have contributed to declining voter confidence, prompting DAP to reassess its role within the government.

Future of Malaysia's Coalition Government

Although Malaysia's next general election is scheduled for early 2028, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has previously indicated that an early election could be considered if divisions within the ruling coalition continue to grow.
