A group of Iranian sailors are recovering in a hospital in southern Sri Lanka after surviving a deadly submarine attack that sank their warship in the Indian Ocean. The incident has drawn international attention and further increased tensions during the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
The attack took place on March 4 when a U.S. submarine launched a torpedo that struck an Iranian naval vessel called the IRIS Dena. The ship was sailing in international waters near the Sri Lankan coast when the explosion hit, causing severe damage and eventually sinking the vessel.
After the blast, the ship sent out a distress call. Sri Lanka’s navy quickly responded and began search-and-rescue operations in the waters south of the island. Rescue teams found survivors floating in the sea among debris and life rafts from the destroyed ship.
The rescued sailors were taken to the National Hospital in the port city of Galle, where doctors began treating them for injuries and exhaustion. Authorities said that 32 sailors survived the attack and were admitted to the hospital. Most of them suffered minor injuries and were expected to recover.
At the same time, rescue teams recovered dozens of bodies from the ocean. Officials said at least 87 sailors were killed in the incident. Search operations continued for many others who were still missing after the ship went down.
The warship was believed to be carrying around 180 crew members when the attack happened. Many of them had recently taken part in international naval exercises in the Indian Ocean before the vessel began its return journey to Iran.
The United States later confirmed that its submarine had carried out the strike. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the submarine fired a torpedo that hit the Iranian warship and caused it to sink quickly. The attack was part of a broader military campaign against Iran’s naval forces during the ongoing regional conflict.
According to U.S. officials, operations against Iran’s navy are meant to weaken the country’s military capabilities. The United States has accused Iran of threatening regional security and supporting armed groups across the Middle East. American military leaders say naval strikes are one part of their strategy to reduce those threats.
Iran has strongly criticized the attack and described it as an act of aggression. Iranian officials say the warship was traveling in international waters and posed no immediate danger when it was hit. The incident has further increased anger inside Iran, where leaders have promised to respond to U.S. military actions.
The sinking of the IRIS Dena is considered a major naval loss for Iran. The ship was a modern frigate that had joined the Iranian navy only a few years ago. It was equipped with advanced radar systems, missiles, and other weapons designed for long-distance naval operations.
Military experts say the incident is also historically significant because it is one of the rare cases in modern times where a submarine has sunk a large surface warship during combat. Analysts note that submarine warfare has become less visible in recent decades, making this event particularly notable.
The attack happened hundreds of kilometers away from the main battle zones in the Middle East. However, it shows how the conflict between Iran and its rivals is expanding across a wider geographic area. The Indian Ocean, usually known for busy trade routes, has now become another location affected by military activity.
Sri Lanka, which lies close to the site of the incident, has focused mainly on humanitarian efforts. The country’s navy and emergency teams worked to rescue survivors and bring the injured sailors to safety. Hospital staff in Galle have been providing medical care while police guard the ward where the sailors are staying.
Doctors at the hospital said the rescued sailors were suffering mainly from shock, dehydration, and minor injuries caused by the explosion and the time spent in the water. Many had to swim or cling to floating debris before they were rescued.
The incident has also raised concerns about safety in international waters. Major shipping routes pass near Sri Lanka, and any military conflict in this region could affect commercial vessels and global trade.
Diplomats and world leaders are now watching the situation closely. Many fear that attacks like this could push the region toward a larger war involving more countries and military forces.
For the families of the sailors involved, the tragedy has already caused deep pain. While some survivors are now safe in hospital beds, many families are still waiting for news about relatives who remain missing at sea.
The search for survivors continues as rescue teams scan the waters for any remaining crew members. At the same time, the incident stands as another sign that the current conflict in the region is growing more dangerous and unpredictable.
