India has taken a decisive step in reinforcing its coastal defence architecture with the delivery of INS Malwan, a next-generation anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft. At a time when maritime security is becoming increasingly complex, this induction is not just an addition to the fleet—it is a powerful statement of India’s growing naval strength and its commitment to safeguarding its vast coastline. Designed specifically to operate in shallow waters where larger warships struggle, INS Malwan is built to detect, track, and neutralise underwater threats with precision and speed.

What makes INS Malwan particularly significant is its strong indigenous backbone. Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, the vessel reflects India’s accelerating push toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing. With over 80% indigenous content, it showcases the country’s ability to design and produce advanced naval platforms that meet global standards. This achievement is not just technological, it is strategic, reducing dependence on foreign systems while strengthening domestic industrial ecosystems that power defence innovation.

INS Malwan is engineered for one of the most challenging domains of modern warfare—anti-submarine operations in shallow coastal waters. Equipped with advanced sonar systems, radars, torpedoes, and anti-submarine rockets, the vessel is capable of identifying and engaging underwater threats that often remain undetected by conventional platforms. Its design allows it to operate efficiently in littoral zones, making it a critical asset in defending ports, coastal infrastructure, and strategic maritime routes.

Unlike traditional warships, INS Malwan is built for agility and adaptability. Featuring waterjet propulsion, it offers superior manoeuvrability in shallow and confined waters, ensuring rapid response capabilities. Beyond anti-submarine warfare, the vessel is also equipped for low-intensity maritime operations and mine warfare, making it a versatile platform capable of handling a wide range of naval missions. This multi-role flexibility enhances its operational value, allowing it to respond dynamically to evolving threats across different maritime scenarios.

INS Malwan is the second vessel in a planned series of anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts, forming part of a broader naval modernisation programme. This initiative aims to build a fleet of specialised vessels that can operate effectively in India’s coastal and shallow waters, complementing larger warships and submarines. Together, these vessels will create a layered defence system, strengthening surveillance, response time, and overall maritime domain awareness.

The induction of INS Malwan is more than a technological milestone—it is a reflection of India’s strategic intent to emerge as a dominant maritime power. As global maritime tensions evolve and underwater threats become more sophisticated, the importance of such specialised platforms will only grow. INS Malwan represents the future of coastal defence smart, agile, and indigenously built ensuring that India’s waters remain secure in an increasingly uncertain world.
