Taiwan expects its economy to expand 11.05% in 2026, helped by surging demand for AI chips, technology products and exports.
Taiwan is expected to record its fastest economic growth in nearly four decades this year as strong global demand for artificial intelligence technology boosts exports and manufacturing.
The island’s statistics agency has raised its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 11.05%, up from the previous estimate of 9.64% issued in May. If achieved, it would mark Taiwan’s strongest annual economic expansion since 1987, when growth reached 12.75%.
Strong demand for artificial intelligence technology has become a major driver of Taiwan’s economy.
Taiwan is a critical supplier of advanced chips and technology components used by major global technology companies. Its semiconductor industry has benefited from the rapid expansion of AI-related computing, data centres and high-performance systems.
The island is home to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s largest contract chipmaker, which supplies advanced processors to major technology companies.
AI demand also helped Taiwan’s economy grow 8.76% in 2025, according to the statistics agency.
Taiwan’s exports are expected to increase by 41.07% in 2026 compared with the previous year.
The forecast represents the fastest annual export growth since 1976. The agency previously expected exports to rise 39.77%.
Strong semiconductor shipments and growing demand for AI-related hardware are expected to remain key contributors to export growth.
Taiwan’s technology industry plays an important role in global supply chains, particularly for advanced chips and components used in artificial intelligence systems.

The statistics agency also issued its first economic forecast for 2027, projecting GDP growth of 6.04%.
Although that would represent a significant slowdown from the expected 11.05% expansion this year, it would still indicate strong economic momentum.
Officials said AI development remains particularly important for Taiwan’s economic outlook and needs to be closely monitored.
Alongside the stronger growth outlook, Taiwan also raised its forecast for consumer price inflation.
The consumer price index is now expected to increase 2.07% in 2026, slightly above the central bank’s 2% target and higher than the previous forecast of 1.93%.
The combination of strong economic growth and slightly higher inflation has strengthened expectations that Taiwan’s central bank will keep interest rates unchanged.
Analysts expect the central bank to maintain its current policy rate through the end of the year as policymakers balance strong economic activity with inflation risks.
