French President Emmanuel Macron challenged US President Donald Trump’s claims about progress towards peace in Gaza during his address to the United Nations General Assembly. Macron questioned whether peace could be achieved while humanitarian access remained restricted and Palestinians continued to face serious difficulties.
The disagreement highlighted differences between the two leaders over the Gaza peace initiative and the steps needed to end the conflict. Macron called for meaningful action to improve conditions on the ground, stressing that diplomatic statements must lead to practical results.
The White House defended Trump’s efforts to end the Israel-Hamas war, pointing to progress on hostage releases and the administration’s proposed 20-point Gaza peace plan.
The US administration argued that its diplomatic efforts had produced important results. However, Macron’s criticism reflected concerns about whether these developments had translated into lasting peace and improved humanitarian conditions for civilians.
The differing positions underline the challenges facing international efforts to end the conflict and establish a stable political arrangement for Gaza.
Macron also highlighted violence against Palestinians and Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. He warned that these developments could undermine prospects for Palestinian statehood and make a lasting peace agreement more difficult to achieve.
France recognised a Palestinian state in September 2025 and has supported a two-state solution, under which Israel and Palestine would exist as separate states.
Macron’s position reflects France’s call for renewed diplomatic efforts to protect Palestinian rights, improve regional stability and create conditions for a negotiated settlement.

Macron used his address to defend the role of the United Nations and the importance of international law. He called for stronger international cooperation at a time when conflicts and geopolitical divisions continue to challenge global institutions.
His remarks placed Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, Palestinian statehood and international responsibility at the centre of the discussion.
The exchange between Macron and Trump highlights continuing disagreements over how peace in Gaza should be achieved and measured. Humanitarian access, security arrangements and the future political status of the Palestinian territories remain central issues in international diplomacy.
