Samsung Electro-Mechanics Reportedly Secures $2.8 Billion Chip Investment From Tesla and Nvidia

Post by : Saif

Samsung Electro-Mechanics is set to receive a reported investment worth $2.8 billion from Tesla and Nvidia to expand production of advanced semiconductor components used in artificial intelligence chips. The planned investment will support new manufacturing facilities in Sejong, South Korea, according to a media report published on October 22, 2026.

The investment is expected to focus on advanced chip substrates known as FC-BGA, which help connect semiconductor chips to electronic circuit boards. Demand for these components is growing as companies expand their AI computing systems, data centres and other advanced technologies.

Tesla and Nvidia Investment Details

According to the report, the total investment will amount to 3.7 trillion South Korean won, equivalent to approximately $2.8 billion.

Tesla is expected to contribute 1.1 trillion won, while Nvidia will invest 2.6 trillion won. The funds would be used to establish production lines in Sejong for manufacturing advanced chip substrates.

The report, which cited industry sources, said the companies would receive supplies under long-term contracts. These arrangements could help Samsung Electro-Mechanics plan production capacity while supporting Tesla and Nvidia’s requirements for advanced semiconductor components.

The investment details were reported by South Korea’s Maeil Business Newspaper. The reported plan has not been independently confirmed in the supplied information.

What Are FC-BGA Chip Substrates?

FC-BGA stands for Flip Chip Ball Grid Array. It is an advanced semiconductor packaging substrate that connects a chip to a printed circuit board and helps transmit electrical signals between them.

These substrates are important for high-performance computing because they support complex chips that need to process large amounts of data. Their design and manufacturing quality can affect how efficiently advanced processors operate.

AI accelerators, data-centre processors and other powerful computing chips require sophisticated packaging technologies. As AI systems become more demanding, manufacturers need components that can support higher performance and increasingly complex chip designs.

Why AI Growth Is Driving Demand

The expansion of artificial intelligence has increased demand for advanced chips used in data centres, computing infrastructure and other digital services. Companies developing AI models and hardware need powerful processors capable of handling intensive workloads.

Nvidia is a major supplier of AI computing chips, while Tesla develops technology for electric vehicles, autonomous driving and AI-based systems. Reliable access to advanced semiconductor components can be important for companies seeking to expand these businesses.

The reported investment would connect Samsung Electro-Mechanics more closely with two major technology companies. Long-term supply agreements could also provide greater visibility into future demand for its chip substrates.

South Korea’s Role in Semiconductor Manufacturing

South Korea is an important centre for semiconductor production and advanced electronics manufacturing. Investment in specialised components such as FC-BGA substrates could strengthen the country’s position in the wider semiconductor supply chain.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics produces electronic components for a range of technology applications. Expanding its advanced substrate manufacturing capacity could help it serve customers working on high-performance computing and AI hardware.

The planned production facilities in Sejong would add to the industrial activity surrounding South Korea’s semiconductor sector. However, the scale and timing of production will depend on the final investment arrangements and implementation of the reported plan.

What the Reported Deal Could Mean for the AI Chip Industry

The reported $2.8 billion investment highlights how demand for AI technology is influencing spending beyond the chips themselves. Semiconductor packaging materials and supporting components are also becoming increasingly important as computing hardware grows more complex.

If the reported plan proceeds, Samsung Electro-Mechanics could expand its role in supplying advanced substrates to Tesla and Nvidia. The long-term contracts described in the report could support production planning and strengthen supply relationships.

The development also reflects a wider trend in the technology industry: companies are investing across different stages of the semiconductor supply chain to support growing AI computing needs.
