Volkswagen Plans Major US Overhaul With New Pickup Truck

Volkswagen is preparing a major overhaul of its US strategy, with plans for new management and an expanded vehicle lineup that could include the company's first pickup truck built in the United States.

Company sources said Volkswagen is considering a pickup truck and larger SUVs to increase its presence in the highly competitive American market. The planned pickup could reach the market before the end of the decade.

Volkswagen Targets US Pickup and SUV Market

Thomas Schaefer, head of the Volkswagen brand, sees significant growth opportunities in pickup trucks and large SUVs, segments that remain popular and profitable in the United States.

Volkswagen currently has no major presence in the US pickup market, which is dominated by Ford, General Motors and Stellantis' Ram brand.

Pickup trucks represented nearly 20% of US vehicle sales last year, according to Cox Automotive. Large pickups have also commanded high prices, with average sticker prices approaching $70,000.

Volkswagen hopes to use this strong demand to expand its US business and compete more directly in profitable vehicle segments.

New Management for US Operations

Management changes are also expected as part of the strategy.

Marco Schubert, who previously served as head of sales at Volkswagen's premium Audi brand, is expected to move to the United States and take over the company's US business.

He will replace Kjell Gruner, who is leaving Volkswagen.

The planned management change comes as Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume pushes for a broader restructuring of the group amid rising costs and increasing competition from Chinese automakers.

Pickup Truck Could Be Built in America

Volkswagen is considering building its planned pickup truck in the United States.

The company operates a manufacturing plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Production of the electric ID.4 at the facility was discontinued earlier this year following changes in US incentives for electric vehicles.

Volkswagen could potentially use its US manufacturing presence to support production of the new vehicle, although final plans have not yet been announced.

Ford Considered as Potential Partner

Volkswagen has not decided whether it will develop the pickup truck independently or work with another automaker.

Ford is considered a potential partner because the two companies already have an existing business relationship.

Ford uses Volkswagen's MEB electric vehicle platform for its Explorer and Capri models produced in Germany. Volkswagen's Amarok pickup, which is built in South Africa, also shares its platform with the Ford Ranger.

A decision on a potential partnership is expected in the coming months.

Volkswagen Seeks Stronger Position in US

Volkswagen currently holds around 4% of the US auto market, leaving significant room for expansion.

The company faces strong competition from established American manufacturers, particularly in the pickup and large SUV segments.

Ford and General Motors have recently benefited from strong demand for trucks and SUVs and have raised their 2026 profit outlooks.

Volkswagen's planned strategy could therefore mark a major shift in its approach to the US market, with locally built vehicles, new leadership and a stronger focus on high-demand segments at the centre of its expansion plans.
