SpaceX, Tesla to Invest $16.8 Billion in AI Chip Plant in Texas

SpaceX and Tesla are set to initially invest $16.8 billion to build Terafab, a major advanced semiconductor manufacturing complex in Grimes County, Texas, as Elon Musk's companies seek greater control over the supply of chips needed for artificial intelligence and future technologies.

The facility is designed to manufacture advanced AI processors and memory chips for applications ranging from Tesla's humanoid robots and Cybercabs to SpaceX's planned space-based data centres.

Terafab to Manufacture Chips Under One Roof

Terafab is planned as a vertically integrated semiconductor facility covering around 100 million square feet. The complex is expected to manufacture, package and test advanced logic and memory chips at the same site.

SpaceX said the facility will employ at least 3,000 people once operational.

Musk described the project as an effort to bring advanced chip manufacturing to the United States while creating thousands of high-paying jobs in Texas.

Investment Could Rise Further

The initial $16.8 billion investment could increase substantially as additional phases of the project are developed.

Earlier plans had indicated an initial investment of around $55 billion, with total spending potentially reaching $119 billion if all planned expansion phases are completed.

The scale of the project reflects Musk's growing focus on securing semiconductor capacity for his companies' expanding artificial intelligence operations.

Chips for Tesla Robots and SpaceX Data Centres

Terafab is expected to produce processors for Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots and Cybercabs.

SpaceX also plans to use high-performance chips for space-based data centres, a key part of its broader strategy to expand computing infrastructure beyond Earth.

Musk has increasingly integrated artificial intelligence projects across his businesses. SpaceX also acquired his AI company xAI earlier this year as part of plans involving space-based computing infrastructure.

SpaceX and Tesla Expand Texas Operations

The Terafab project adds to the companies' growing presence across Texas.

Tesla had already begun construction of a research facility at its Giga Texas complex, which is expected to serve as a precursor to the larger semiconductor project.

SpaceX and Tesla also have operations in locations including Starbase, Bastrop and McGregor.

The proposed Terafab site is located near Gibbons Creek Reservoir, with the companies planning to use reservoir water for industrial operations rather than relying on local groundwater.

Partnership With Intel

SpaceX has also partnered with Intel as it works to strengthen its semiconductor capabilities.

Intel has been seeking to expand its contract manufacturing business as part of a broader effort to improve its position in the global chip industry.

The partnership could support the development of advanced chip production capabilities needed by Musk's companies.

Texas Becomes Key Base for Musk's Technology Plans

Texas has become an increasingly important location for Musk's technology and manufacturing operations. The state offers a large industrial base and has attracted major investments from Tesla and SpaceX.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott welcomed the Terafab project, highlighting the state's growing role in advanced technology and manufacturing.

The Terafab investment could ultimately become one of the largest semiconductor projects in the United States and give SpaceX and Tesla greater control over critical chip supplies as demand for AI computing continues to grow.
