In a historic leap for urban mobility in the United States, Sound Transit has officially opened its long-awaited Link light rail extension across Lake Washington, connecting Seattle with Bellevue and the wider Eastside region. This milestone marks the culmination of nearly two decades of planning and construction, delivering a transformative transit corridor that promises to redefine daily commuting patterns across one of the fastest-growing metropolitan regions in North America. The opening is not just a transport upgrade, it is a generational infrastructure achievement that brings together economic hubs, residential communities, and innovation corridors through a seamless, high-capacity rail network. 

What sets this project apart on the global stage is its engineering breakthrough, the light rail line operates across a floating bridge on Interstate 90, making it the first system of its kind in the world. This 7-mile cross-lake segment is a critical piece of the broader East Link Extension, enabling trains to glide across Lake Washington while maintaining the speed and reliability expected from modern urban rail systems. 

The extension includes key new stations such as Mercer Island and Judkins Park, strategically positioned to enhance accessibility and connectivity for thousands of commuters. By integrating with existing transit lines, the project eliminates the need for multiple transfers, significantly improving travel efficiency and reducing journey times across the region. 

The new link fundamentally reshapes how people move across the Seattle metropolitan area. By connecting the Eastside directly with downtown Seattle and beyond, the extension creates a continuous light rail network spanning over 60 miles. This integrated system allows passengers to travel seamlessly from Redmond through Bellevue into Seattle and further north or south without interruptions. 

With trains running at high frequency every 8 to 15 minutes, the system offers a reliable alternative to congested road networks. Travel times between key destinations are significantly reduced, with journeys between Bellevue and central Seattle expected to take around 20 minutes. This efficiency is expected to attract tens of thousands of daily riders, dramatically increasing public transport adoption in the region. 

Beyond convenience, the project is a major step forward in promoting sustainable urban development. By encouraging a shift from private vehicles to public transport, the extension is expected to reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and support environmentally responsible growth.

The rail line also plays a crucial role in supporting economic activity, linking major employment centers, technology hubs, and residential areas. For a region known for its booming tech industry and rapid population growth, this level of connectivity is essential in maintaining long-term economic competitiveness and livability.
