United Airlines Plans Major 2027 Europe Expansion With A321XLR Jets

United Airlines expects to receive enough Airbus A321XLR aircraft to support its planned European expansion in summer 2027, as the airline prepares to launch services to several new destinations.

The Chicago-based carrier plans to use the long-range, single-aisle aircraft on five new European routes next year. The expansion will include destinations such as Luxembourg, Ibiza in Spain and Toulouse in France.

The new services are part of United Airlines' biggest international expansion programme, covering 10 new cities across Europe and Asia.

A321XLR to support new routes

United's senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, Patrick Quayle, said the airline expects to have enough A321XLR aircraft to operate its planned schedule despite some delays and challenges surrounding the programme.

Airbus has faced production and supply-chain constraints that have affected deliveries of the A321XLR to several airlines. Despite these issues, United remains confident that it will receive the aircraft required for its 2027 international expansion.

The airline ordered the A321XLR in 2019 and plans to begin international operations with the aircraft on December 1, 2026, flying from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin.

Aircraft to replace ageing Boeing 757 fleet

The A321XLR is also expected to play an important role in United's fleet renewal strategy. The airline plans to gradually phase out its older Boeing 757 aircraft as more A321XLR jets enter service.

The long-range single-aisle aircraft gives airlines the ability to operate routes that may not have enough demand to justify larger wide-body aircraft. This makes it particularly useful for connecting smaller European cities with major U.S. markets.

United said its fleet plans remain flexible and are being adjusted as aircraft manufacturers deal with delivery delays.

Airbus delays affect Coastliner programme

While United expects to receive enough A321XLR aircraft for its European plans, Airbus delivery delays have affected another United programme.

The airline's A321neo Coastliner aircraft, designed for premium transcontinental services, has experienced delays before entering commercial service.

The delays highlight the wider challenges facing airlines as aircraft manufacturers work through production and supply-chain constraints.

European travel demand remains strong

United's expansion comes as the airline sees strong demand for travel to Europe extending beyond the traditional summer season.

According to the airline, European schedules are not being reduced as sharply after the U.S. Labor Day holiday as they were in previous years. Demand is now remaining strong into October and potentially November.

United said it has not seen a significant decline in European travel despite extreme summer temperatures across parts of the region.

Strong demand, particularly from premium travellers, is encouraging airlines to maintain international services for longer periods.

New opportunities for European travel

United's planned expansion will give travellers more options to reach European destinations directly from the United States. The A321XLR's long range is expected to help the airline serve smaller markets that may not support larger aircraft.

The expansion also reflects broader changes in international aviation, with airlines increasingly using fuel-efficient narrow-body aircraft for longer international routes.

For United, the A321XLR is expected to become an important part of its international network as the carrier expands its presence in Europe while replacing older aircraft.
