Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off India's first hydrogen-powered passenger train from Jind Railway Station in Haryana, marking a major milestone in the country's journey toward clean and sustainable transportation.
With the launch, India joins a select group of nations operating hydrogen-powered passenger trains, highlighting its growing focus on green energy and environmentally friendly mobility solutions.
Unlike conventional electric trains that receive power from overhead electric lines, the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trainset produces electricity onboard.
The train generates power through a chemical reaction between hydrogen stored inside the train and oxygen from the atmosphere. This process produces electricity without combustion, while water vapour and heat are the only by-products, making it a zero-emission mode of rail transport.
One of the key highlights of the hydrogen train is its advanced multi-layer safety system.
The train is fitted with sensors capable of continuously detecting hydrogen leaks, excessive heat, flames and smoke throughout the train. If the system detects any unusual condition, it immediately activates automatic safety protocols.
The onboard system can automatically shut off the hydrogen supply without requiring manual intervention, reducing the risk of accidents. The locomotive cabin also includes a dedicated emergency operating mode, allowing the train to move safely if required.
In addition, the driver receives real-time system health updates through a digital monitoring display, enabling continuous supervision of the train's hydrogen propulsion system.

The hydrogen train will initially operate on the 89-kilometre Jind–Sonipat section of Northern Railway in Haryana.
The route includes major stations such as Jind Junction, Gohana Junction, and Sonipat, along with several intermediate stations and halts.
The train has an operational speed of 75 km/h and a design speed of 110 km/h, making it suitable for regular passenger services.
Unlike hydrogen trains operating in many other countries, which usually consist of two to four coaches, India's hydrogen train has been designed as a 10-coach passenger train capable of carrying approximately 2,600 passengers.
This demonstrates India's ability to deploy hydrogen technology on high-capacity passenger routes.
To support operations, Indian Railways has established the country's first integrated hydrogen railway ecosystem at Jind, including hydrogen storage, compression and refuelling facilities.
This dedicated infrastructure will enable efficient refuelling and maintenance while supporting future expansion of hydrogen-powered rail services across India.
The hydrogen-powered train represents a significant move toward reducing carbon emissions in the railway sector. By replacing fossil fuels with clean hydrogen technology, Indian Railways aims to improve energy efficiency while supporting the country's broader environmental and sustainability goals.
The successful operation of the Jind–Sonipat service is expected to serve as a model for future hydrogen-powered train projects across the national rail network.
