In a major step toward transforming Egypt’s Red Sea logistics landscape, Noatum Ports has confirmed the delivery of advanced ship-to-shore (STS) and rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes at its Safaga terminal. This milestone marks the transition from infrastructure development to operational readiness, signaling that one of the region’s most strategically positioned port projects is moving closer to full-scale activity.

The arrival of these cranes is not just a technical upgrade, it represents the activation of a high-performance cargo handling ecosystem that will redefine how goods move across the Red Sea corridor.

At the heart of this development are three Super Post-Panamax STS cranes and six RTG cranes, designed to handle large container volumes with speed and precision. These cranes form the backbone of modern port operations, enabling faster vessel turnaround times and optimized yard management.

STS cranes are critical for loading and unloading containers directly from vessels, while RTG cranes manage container stacking and movement within the terminal. Together, they create a seamless flow of cargo, significantly improving operational efficiency and reducing delays across the supply chain.

The delivery of this equipment marks a turning point for the Safaga terminal, shifting it from a construction phase into early operational activity. This transition is crucial, as it allows port authorities to begin testing systems, training personnel, and gradually scaling operations ahead of the official launch.

Such phased activation ensures that when the terminal becomes fully operational, it can deliver high productivity from day one, an essential requirement in today’s fast-paced global trade environment.

Located on Egypt’s Red Sea coast, the Safaga terminal is poised to become a key gateway connecting Africa, the Middle East, and global shipping routes. Its strategic positioning allows it to capture cargo flows moving through one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors, offering an alternative to congested regional hubs.

The terminal is designed to handle a diverse range of cargo, including containers, dry and liquid bulk, and roll-on/roll-off shipments. This multi-purpose capability enhances its attractiveness to global shipping lines seeking flexible and efficient port solutions.

Spanning approximately 810,000 square metres with a 1,000-metre quay wall, the Safaga terminal is built for scale. It is expected to handle up to 450,000 TEUs annually, alongside millions of tonnes of bulk cargo and specialized freight.

This level of capacity positions the terminal as a major contributor to regional trade growth, supporting industries ranging from manufacturing and mining to energy and infrastructure development. The integration of modern facilities such as warehouses, workshops, and advanced security systems further strengthens its operational capabilities.

The deployment of these cranes is part of a broader investment strategy led by AD Ports Group, with significant capital allocated to equipment procurement and infrastructure development. This investment underscores strong confidence in Egypt’s potential as a global logistics hub and its ability to attract international trade flows.

By combining advanced equipment with strategic location advantages, the Safaga terminal is positioned to play a pivotal role in enhancing Egypt’s competitiveness in the global maritime sector.

The introduction of advanced cargo handling systems at Safaga reflects a broader trend in the maritime industry, where ports are evolving into highly efficient, technology-driven logistics hubs. Automation, precision equipment, and integrated systems are becoming essential for meeting the demands of modern shipping. For Noatum Ports, this project represents more than just expansion, it is a statement of intent to deliver world-class port operations that can compete on a global scale.

As the Safaga terminal moves closer to its official launch, its impact on regional trade dynamics is expected to be significant. By improving connectivity, reducing turnaround times, and offering scalable capacity, the terminal is set to become a key node in the Red Sea logistics network.

In an era where efficiency defines competitiveness, investments like these are shaping the future of global trade. And with Safaga stepping into the spotlight, the Red Sea is rapidly emerging as one of the most critical corridors in the world’s supply chain.
