Japan's largest electricity producer JERA has announced that it has secured enough liquefied natural gas (LNG) inventories through October, ensuring stable electricity generation during the country's peak summer demand season.
Company executive Masato Otaki said there is no immediate concern over fuel availability, even if prolonged heatwaves increase electricity consumption between August and October.
JERA stated that its current LNG reserves are sufficient to support uninterrupted electricity generation during the summer months.
The company said it will continue monitoring fuel inventories closely while managing procurement through its global trading operations to prepare for higher demand during the winter season.
Officials also noted that LNG imports from Qatar represent only a small portion of JERA's diversified supply portfolio.
JERA reported a net profit of 123.1 billion yen for the April–June quarter, representing a 31% increase compared with the same period last year.
The company also raised its full-year net profit forecast to 280 billion yen, citing improved earnings from domestic thermal power generation, LNG operations and coal-related businesses.
Higher-than-expected wholesale electricity prices also contributed to the stronger financial results.
JERA said it is proceeding with the resale of certain long-term power purchase agreements, including coal-fired power contracts, as part of efforts to reduce electricity costs for customers.
While the strategy may temporarily affect company earnings, officials believe it will contribute to greater market stability and support more sustainable profits in the coming years.

Responding to reports about a potential gas-fired power plant in the United States, JERA said it continues to evaluate investment opportunities in North America's independent power sector.
The company declined to comment on specific projects but confirmed that overseas energy investments remain an important part of its long-term business strategy.
As Japan continues to rely heavily on imported LNG for electricity generation, maintaining adequate fuel inventories remains critical for energy security.
JERA's latest update offers reassurance that the country is well prepared to meet summer electricity demand while continuing to strengthen fuel procurement and supply chain resilience.
