Elon Musk has strongly denied reports claiming Tesla is preparing to separate, sell, or spin off its China business. Responding on his social media platform X, Musk dismissed the report as "absurdly fake news," stating that such a proposal has never been discussed within the company.
The response came after media reports suggested Tesla executives had been asked to prepare contingency plans involving the company's China operations.
The report claimed Tesla advisers had explored several options for the company's China business, including a spin-off, sale, or even closure. It also suggested discussions were taking place ahead of a possible merger between Tesla and Musk's aerospace company, SpaceX.
According to the report, executives had also considered creating a separate sales entity to manage exports from Tesla's Shanghai manufacturing facility.
Musk, however, rejected the claims outright and said no such discussions had ever taken place.
Industry analysts say any future merger between Tesla and SpaceX would face significant regulatory and geopolitical challenges.
SpaceX works closely with the U.S. government on national security and satellite programs, while Tesla operates one of the largest foreign-owned automobile manufacturing facilities in China. These differences have led to speculation about how the companies could operate under a single corporate structure.
Tesla's Gigafactory Shanghai continues to be the company's largest and most productive manufacturing facility. The plant has an annual production capacity of more than 950,000 vehicles and serves as a major export hub for Europe, Canada, and several Asia-Pacific markets.
The Shanghai factory has historically contributed more than half of Tesla's global vehicle deliveries, making it one of the company's most valuable production assets.

China remains Tesla's second-largest market after the United States, although competition has intensified due to the rapid growth of domestic electric vehicle manufacturers.
Tesla benefits from a highly localized supply chain in China, sourcing more than 95% of components for locally produced Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from domestic suppliers. Many of these suppliers also provide components for Tesla's global operations.
Recent sales data showed continued growth, with deliveries of China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles increasing significantly during the latest reporting period.
Despite ongoing market speculation, Musk's latest comments indicate Tesla has no plans to separate or sell its China operations.
With Gigafactory Shanghai playing a vital role in global production and exports, the company continues to view China as one of its most important manufacturing and sales markets while expanding its international electric vehicle business.
