China Moves Ahead With 200 Boeing Jet Purchase Commitment

China is making progress on its commitment to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Monday. The development comes ahead of US President Donald Trump’s planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week.

Greer said many of the aircraft included in the May commitment are moving through the order process, but he did not indicate that China is preparing to announce another major Boeing purchase during the Trump-Xi talks.

China Moves Forward With Boeing Orders

Speaking about the 200-aircraft commitment, Greer said around 140 planes were in a good state. He added that another 10 aircraft were being written into formal orders by Chinese airlines.

The commitment announced in May was significant for Boeing because it marked the company’s first major Chinese aircraft deal in nearly a decade.

China is one of the world's largest aviation markets, making aircraft purchases by its airlines important for Boeing’s long-term commercial business.

Trump Had Mentioned Bigger Boeing Deal

The 200 aircraft commitment could be part of a much larger potential agreement.

In May, Trump said China could eventually increase its Boeing order to as many as 750 aircraft. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg also described the 200-aircraft commitment as an “initial tranche” of a potentially larger deal.

However, Ortberg recently indicated that Boeing does not expect a major additional order to necessarily be announced during the Trump-Xi meeting.

He said future aircraft orders would be announced by Chinese airlines according to their own schedules.

Trump-Xi Meeting Comes Amid US-China Trade Talks

The Boeing purchase is taking place as Washington and Beijing continue discussions on trade and other economic issues.

Trump and Xi are expected to discuss several areas of the US-China relationship during their meeting, including trade, technology and other economic matters.

For Boeing, progress on the 200-aircraft commitment could provide greater clarity over future deliveries and its position in the Chinese aviation market.

What the Boeing Deal Means for China

Chinese airlines regularly need new aircraft as they expand and replace older planes. Boeing and Airbus are the two major global manufacturers serving the commercial aircraft market.

Finalizing the 200 Boeing aircraft commitment would give Chinese airlines access to additional aircraft while providing Boeing with a significant group of orders from one of the world's largest aviation markets.

The current progress also leaves open the possibility of additional Boeing purchases in the future, although no new large order has been confirmed ahead of the Trump-Xi meeting.
