India is preparing to transform its inland water transport landscape with the construction of Brahmaputra riverine lighthouses, the first such navigation infrastructure ever developed on an inland river in the country. The initiative aims to strengthen India inland waterway navigation and make cargo and passenger movement along the Brahmaputra safer and more reliable.
The project represents a significant milestone in India’s maritime development strategy, especially for the northeastern region where river transport has long served as a vital economic lifeline. By introducing modern navigational systems along the river, authorities hope to create a more efficient and dependable Brahmaputra cargo transport corridor that can operate day and night. The National Waterway-2 navigation project on the Brahmaputra River is one of India’s most important inland transport initiatives. Stretching across Assam, the waterway serves as a key logistics route connecting industrial zones, agricultural regions, and cross-border trade routes.
Under the new plan, multiple Brahmaputra riverine lighthouses will be constructed at strategically chosen locations along the river.
