In a significant stride toward clean energy adoption in shipping logistics, the Government of India has approved the construction of a ₹797 crore green hydrogen jetty at Paradip Port in Odisha. The project, aimed at establishing Paradip as a major sustainable port infrastructure hub, aligns with broader national priorities on decarbonising transportation, expanding clean fuel ecosystems and strengthening India’s role in future-ready smart ports & logistics hubs.
The approval comes as global maritime actors intensify efforts to reduce carbon emissions, a key contributor to climate change and the Paradip initiative positions India at the forefront of sustainable maritime fuel innovation in the Indo-Pacific.
The green hydrogen jetty at Paradip Port is designed to facilitate production, storage and bunkering of green hydrogen, a zero-carbon maritime fuel produced via renewable energy sources. Strategically located on India’s eastern seaboard, Paradip Port already handles substantial bulk and container traffic, making it a logical choice to pilot large-scale deployment of alternative fuels.
Once operational, the jetty will enable vessels calling at Paradip to refuel with green hydrogen blends significantly reducing lifecycle emissions compared with traditional marine fuels. It will also serve as a logistics node for inland distribution of hydrogen to industries exploring hydrogen mobility and power solutions.
Officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways underscored that the project is set to enhance India’s maritime energy security while advancing exports of green hydrogen-based products anticipated to be in high global demand.
The Paradip green hydrogen jetty will incorporate state-of-the-art handling, storage and safety systems tailored for hydrogen bunkering and logistics. By integrating digital monitoring, zero-emission equipment and advanced energy management tools, the facility will exemplify how next-generation fuel supply chains can function within a smart ports & logistics hubs framework.
Engineers and planners are also exploring synergies between the hydrogen jetty and the port’s existing electrification and renewable energy infrastructure. This could include solar and wind power integration to ensure that hydrogen production and handling remain as green as possible.
The project is expected to boost ancillary services such as tank storage, distributed refuelling coordination, and new employment opportunities tied to hydrogen logistics operations.
The ₹797 crore investment is not only an environmental milestone; it also stands to deliver economic value by stimulating industrial clusters around zero-emission fuel supply chains. Green hydrogen is envisaged as a critical feedstock for decarbonising sectors such as steel, fertiliser and heavy transport. With Paradip emerging as a hydrogen hub, the region could attract fresh investment from clean energy firms and logistics players seeking access to this emerging market.
Environmental advocates have welcomed the green hydrogen jetty as a landmark effort to reduce maritime emissions and accelerate India’s transition toward sustainable mobility. Ports are traditionally major fuel consumption centres, and decarbonising their operations is central to national and international climate commitments.
By approving the green hydrogen jetty at Paradip, India signals its readiness to integrate alternative fuel systems into core port operations. This initiative complements other national efforts such as hydrogen corridors, clean energy incentives and collaborations with global partners on low-carbon shipping solutions.
As global shipping increasingly emphasises cleaner fuels and infrastructure readiness, Indo-Pacific ports with hydrogen bunkering capabilities will likely benefit from enhanced connectivity and commercial interest. Paradip Port’s new role as a clean fuel hub positions it to capture emerging opportunities in hydrogen shipping economics and international logistics networks.
