India’s port and logistics sector has received a major boost as Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) reported its highest-ever monthly cargo handling of 46 million metric tonnes (MMT) in March 2026. This milestone reflects an 11% year-on-year growth, signaling strong operational momentum and rising trade activity across the country’s maritime ecosystem. At a time when global shipping faces volatility, this performance stands out as a testament to India’s growing resilience in port infrastructure and cargo management.

The record-breaking March performance capped an equally impressive financial year, with APSEZ handling a total of 500.8 MMT of cargo in FY 2025–26, also marking an 11% annual growth. This achievement positions the company firmly as India’s largest private port operator and a key driver of the country’s trade expansion. The milestone reflects not just volume growth but also the scale at which India’s logistics ecosystem is evolving to meet rising domestic and international demand.

A major catalyst behind this surge has been the strong performance in container traffic, which grew by approximately 19% during FY26, with March alone witnessing a 14% increase. Containers, often considered a key indicator of trade health, have emerged as the backbone of APSEZ’s growth strategy. The rise highlights increasing industrial activity, higher import-export volumes, and stronger integration of India into global supply chains.

Beyond domestic operations, Adani Ports’ international assets are also contributing significantly to its growth trajectory. The Haifa port, a strategic overseas asset, recorded increased cargo activity in March, indicating improving performance across global trade corridors. This diversification into international markets not only strengthens the company’s operational base but also enhances its ability to navigate global disruptions and shifting trade routes more effectively.

With a network spanning multiple ports and terminals and a current capacity exceeding 600 MMT annually, APSEZ is strategically positioned to handle rising cargo volumes in the coming years. The company’s long-term vision includes scaling up to 1 billion tonnes of cargo by 2030, a target that reflects both ambition and confidence in India’s trade growth story. Investments in port infrastructure, automation, and hinterland connectivity are playing a critical role in enabling this expansion.

The implications of this growth extend far beyond the company itself. Higher cargo volumes translate into improved trade efficiency, faster turnaround times, and enhanced supply chain reliability. For industries ranging from manufacturing to energy, this means smoother movement of goods and reduced logistical bottlenecks. In a global environment where supply chains are constantly tested, India’s ability to scale port operations at this level provides a competitive advantage.

Adani Ports’ record-breaking performance is more than just a numerical achievement,it is a clear signal of India’s accelerating role in global trade and logistics. As cargo volumes rise and infrastructure continues to evolve, the country is steadily positioning itself as a critical hub in international supply chains. If this growth trajectory continues, India’s ports could soon redefine efficiency and scale in global maritime logistics, setting new benchmarks for the industry.
