United Kingdom has designated Microsoft, Google, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Oracle as critical third-party cloud service providers, bringing them under direct regulatory oversight to protect the country's financial system.
The move is designed to improve the resilience of banks, insurers, and financial institutions against cyberattacks, technology failures, and large-scale service disruptions.
New Rules Aim to Protect Financial Stability
UK authorities said financial institutions are becoming increasingly dependent on cloud computing services for critical operations.
Officials warned that a major outage or cyber incident affecting one large cloud provider could disrupt multiple financial firms simultaneously, potentially impacting essential services used by businesses and consumers.
Cloud Providers Face Stronger Regulatory Oversight
Under the new framework, Microsoft, Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and Oracle will be supervised by the Bank of England, the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
The companies will be required to:
Conduct regular resilience testing.
Complete periodic self-assessments.
Report significant technology or cybersecurity incidents.
Meet regulatory standards for operational resilience.
UK Strengthens Cybersecurity Framework
The designation reflects the UK's broader effort to strengthen cybersecurity and reduce risks associated with growing reliance on digital infrastructure.
Officials believe stronger oversight of major technology providers will help safeguard financial markets against operational failures and cyber threats.
Industry Responds to New Regulations
Google Cloud welcomed the new regulatory framework, saying effective implementation and collaboration with the industry could strengthen the resilience, transparency, and trust within the UK's financial ecosystem.
The UK's approach follows similar regulatory efforts introduced by the European Union to oversee major technology providers supporting critical financial services.
