Tesla’s new-car registrations increased across several European markets in September, adding to signs that the electric vehicle maker is recovering from two years of falling sales in the region.
Registration data showed Tesla sales rose sharply in France, Sweden and Norway compared with the same month last year. The figures provide another indication that demand for the company’s electric vehicles may be improving across Europe.
Tesla registrations in France increased by 61.9% in September compared with a year earlier, according to data from French automotive industry group PFA.
Norway recorded a smaller increase of 2.2%, while registrations in Sweden jumped 38.4%, according to figures from Norway’s OFV and Mobility Sweden.
Vehicle registrations are widely used as an indicator of new-car sales because they track vehicles that have been registered for use on the road.
The September figures add to a broader improvement in Tesla’s European performance.
Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association showed Tesla registrations across the European Union, Britain and the European Free Trade Association increased 43.3% between January and August compared with the same period a year earlier.
The wider battery-electric vehicle market also grew strongly during the same period, with registrations rising 38.8%.
Tesla’s increase was therefore faster than the overall growth rate for battery-electric vehicles across those markets.

Several factors are supporting the improvement in European registrations. Comparisons with weaker sales a year earlier have made the latest growth rates stronger.
Higher fuel prices may also be encouraging some consumers to consider electric vehicles. Government incentives in several European markets and continued interest in electric cars are additional factors supporting demand.
Tesla’s performance also comes as competition in Europe’s electric vehicle market continues to expand, with established carmakers and newer manufacturers offering more battery-powered models.
Registration data from Germany and Britain are expected later this week. These two countries are among Europe’s largest automobile markets.
Their figures will provide more information about whether Tesla’s September improvement was widespread across the region or concentrated in selected markets.
The latest numbers show a stronger performance for Tesla compared with much of the previous two-year period, but the company’s European sales trend will depend on demand across major markets in the coming months.
