Jammu-Srinagar NH Closed Tomorrow Traffic Police Issues Advisory

Post by : Armust Desk

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), one of the busiest and most vital road routes connecting Jammu with Srinagar, will remain closed for all vehicular movement tomorrow, August 30, 2025. This decision has been officially confirmed by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Traffic National Highway, citing ongoing restoration work in the stretch between Jakheni and Chenani.

The highway has faced multiple challenges in recent weeks due to heavy rainfall in the region, causing landslides and flash floods, especially in the Udhampur-Ramban belt. These natural disruptions have significantly damaged portions of the highway, making it unsafe for vehicles to pass through. Authorities have emphasized that public safety remains the top priority, and therefore, the road will remain closed until conditions improve.

Reasons for the Closure

The primary reason for the closure is the continuous rainfall that has triggered landslides along the highway. These landslides have blocked several stretches, making it extremely difficult and dangerous for vehicles to move safely. In addition, flash floods caused by overflowing streams and rivers in nearby areas have further compromised road safety.

Repair and restoration teams have been working around the clock to clear debris and repair damaged sections of the highway. However, given the extent of damage, authorities have determined that it is not safe to allow traffic until the work is completed. The highway closure is, therefore, necessary to avoid accidents and ensure the safety of travelers.

Impact on Commuters

The closure of NH-44 will significantly affect commuters, transporters, and travelers who rely on this highway daily. Hundreds of vehicles are already stranded at various points along the route, creating congestion and uncertainty for those planning to travel. Authorities have strongly advised commuters to avoid traveling on this route tomorrow.

Residents and travelers are urged to stay updated on the latest road conditions and follow instructions from the traffic police. Delaying non-essential travel or seeking alternate routes is recommended to avoid inconvenience and potential hazards.

Alternative Routes and Travel Advisory

While the main highway remains closed, authorities have provided alternative routes for travelers to reach their destinations safely. These alternate options are subject to weather conditions and traffic regulations:

  • Nagrota to Reasi, Chenani, Patnitop, Doda, Ramban, Banihal, and Srinagar: No vehicles will be allowed to pass from Nagrota toward these destinations. Travelers are requested to delay their journey until the highway is reopened.

  • Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag Road (NH-244): Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) may use this route if weather permits. Vehicles traveling from Anantnag will be allowed between 8 am and 4 pm, while vehicles from Kishtwar will be allowed from 9 am to 3 pm.

  • Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) Road: Traffic will be allowed in a regulated manner. LMVs will travel first, followed by Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs). Vehicles from Minamarg towards Srinagar will be allowed between 5 am and 10 am, and vehicles from Sonamarg towards Kargil will be allowed between 11:30 am and 5:30 pm.

  • Mughal Road: LMVs may use this route between Jammu and Srinagar via Poonch. HMVs carrying fresh perishables (sixty-tyre vehicles only) will be permitted from Poonch towards Shopian between 6 am and 4:30 pm.

Travelers are strongly advised to confirm the status of roads and traffic updates before starting their journey. Checking with local authorities and traffic control units at key locations such as Jammu, Srinagar, Ramban, Udhampur, Kishtwar, and Kargil will help avoid inconvenience and ensure safety.

Safety Measures and Public Awareness

Authorities have stressed the importance of safety during these adverse weather conditions. Travelers are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow all instructions issued by the traffic police. Safety precautions include:

  • Avoid traveling during heavy rainfall or landslide-prone conditions.

  • Follow official traffic updates and alternate route advisories.

  • Cooperate with authorities and do not attempt to bypass closed sections.

  • Ensure vehicles are properly maintained and equipped for mountain travel.

Public cooperation is critical to ensure that restoration work proceeds smoothly and that travelers remain safe during this period of disruption.

Educational Institutions Affected

The closure of the highway has also affected schools and educational institutions in the region. The Directorate of School Education, Jammu, has announced the closure of all government and private schools in the Jammu division for August 30.

This precaution is taken to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff members who may otherwise need to commute on affected roads. Schools have been advised to consider online classes for students of higher grades wherever feasible and to complete all necessary sanitation and safety checks before reopening.

Restoration Work in Progress

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and other restoration teams are working tirelessly to clear landslides, repair road damage, and restore normal traffic flow. Heavy machinery and manpower have been deployed to expedite the process.

Despite these efforts, authorities have made it clear that safety cannot be compromised. The highway will remain closed until the road is fully restored and deemed safe for vehicular movement. Travelers are urged to be patient and cooperate with ongoing efforts.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as soon as the highway is reopened. Travelers are encouraged to utilize alternate routes, stay informed, and plan journeys according to the latest advisories.

The public is also advised to remain cautious during this period and avoid unnecessary travel. Cooperation and adherence to official instructions will help ensure the safety of all commuters and facilitate the restoration of the highway.
