In a defining milestone for India’s railway manufacturing sector, Indian Railways has successfully completed the export of 10 advanced diesel-electric locomotives to Mozambique, an achievement that signals the country’s rising influence in the global rail industry. This development is far more than a routine export; it represents a strategic leap in India’s “Make in India, Make for the World” vision, showcasing the nation’s ability to design, manufacture, and deliver high-performance rail technology to international markets. As global demand for cost-effective, reliable, and technologically advanced rolling stock continues to grow, India is steadily positioning itself as a competitive player in the global supply chain. The completion of this export order reinforces confidence in Indian engineering capabilities and highlights the country’s ambition to become a major exporter of railway solutions across emerging and developed markets alike.

The locomotives, manufactured at Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) in Varanasi, were delivered in a phased manner throughout 2025, with the final batch recently reaching Mozambique’s Maputo port, marking the successful completion of the contract.

The order, executed through RITES, involved the production and export of ten 3,300 horsepower AC–AC diesel-electric locomotives tailored for Mozambique’s Cape gauge railway system. This structured delivery approach highlights not only India’s manufacturing capacity but also its ability to execute complex international contracts within defined timelines, an essential factor in building long-term credibility in global infrastructure markets.

What sets these locomotives apart is their combination of robust engineering and operator-focused design. Built to international standards, the 3,300 HP locomotives are capable of operating at speeds of up to 100 km/h while delivering high efficiency in both freight and passenger applications.

In addition to performance capabilities, the locomotives incorporate modern, driver-friendly features such as ergonomic cab layouts and onboard amenities, enhancing both operational efficiency and crew comfort. These design elements reflect a broader shift in rail manufacturing, where performance is increasingly complemented by human-centric engineering, ensuring safer and more productive operations.

The Mozambique export is part of a larger strategy to expand India’s presence in international railway markets, particularly across Africa and Asia. Over the past decade, India has steadily increased exports of rolling stock, including locomotives, coaches, and metro systems, to multiple countries.

Africa, in particular, has emerged as a key growth market, with increasing investments in rail infrastructure aimed at improving connectivity and supporting economic development. By supplying advanced locomotives tailored to local requirements, India is not only strengthening bilateral ties but also contributing to the modernization of railway networks in partner countries.

This export milestone underscores the growing success of India’s manufacturing ecosystem, particularly in high-value sectors such as railway engineering. Banaras Locomotive Works is rapidly evolving into a global hub for locomotive production, leveraging indigenous design capabilities and advanced manufacturing technologies to meet international demand.

The involvement of RITES further strengthens this ecosystem, acting as a key facilitator in exporting railway equipment and services worldwide. Together, these institutions represent a robust framework that enables India to compete effectively on the global stage, offering integrated solutions that combine engineering expertise with project execution capabilities.

The successful export of 10 advanced locomotives to Mozambique marks more than just a completed contract, it represents a turning point in India’s journey toward becoming a global leader in railway manufacturing and infrastructure solutions. As countries around the world seek reliable partners for rail modernization, India’s ability to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions positions it as a strong contender in the international market.

Looking ahead, this milestone is likely to open doors for further export opportunities, reinforcing India’s role as a trusted supplier in the global rail ecosystem. In many ways, this achievement reflects a broader narrative, one where India is not just building for itself, but for the world, driving connectivity, economic growth, and technological advancement across borders.
