GM Doubles Down on Diesel Pickups as Ford and Ram Push Hybrids

General Motors is taking a different route from its biggest pickup rivals as it prepares to launch redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. Instead of moving toward hybrid powertrains, GM is strengthening its diesel option, targeting better fuel economy, stronger towing performance and more than 900 miles of highway range with an optional larger fuel tank.

GM Expands Diesel Strategy

GM plans to launch the redesigned Silverado and Sierra in the fourth quarter. The two trucks are among the company’s most important vehicles, generating a large share of its global sales and profits.

The updated trucks will feature an improved 3.0-liter diesel engine. GM says the combination of the new diesel powertrain and a larger optional fuel tank can provide more than 900 miles of highway driving before refueling.

The company believes diesel technology can continue to deliver strong efficiency for pickup owners, particularly those who regularly tow or carry heavy loads.

Ford and Stellantis Take Hybrid Route

GM’s strategy differs from Ford and Stellantis, which have invested more heavily in hybrid technology for their light-duty pickups.

Ford moved away from a diesel engine for its F-150 earlier this decade and has promoted its hybrid system as a combination of power and fuel efficiency.

Stellantis, which makes Ram pickups, is also developing an extended-range hybrid pickup. The company says the vehicle could travel around 690 miles between stops.

The different approaches highlight the continuing competition among Detroit’s major truck manufacturers as they look for ways to improve fuel economy without reducing performance.

Diesel Offers Efficiency and Towing Benefits

Diesel engines generally deliver better highway fuel economy than comparable gasoline engines and produce strong torque. That makes them useful for customers who tow trailers, carry heavy loads or drive in demanding conditions.

GM’s current four-wheel-drive diesel Silverado and Sierra models are rated at around 24 miles per gallon, compared with about 23 mpg for Ford’s four-wheel-drive F-150 hybrid under federal ratings.

However, fuel economy is only one part of the ownership cost.

Diesel fuel is usually more expensive than gasoline. Federal estimates indicate that a GM diesel pickup driven 15,000 miles per year could cost roughly $1,050 more in annual fuel expenses than a comparable gasoline-powered vehicle because of higher diesel prices.

Diesel Prices Create a Challenge

GM’s decision comes as diesel prices remain unusually high in the United States. The national average recently crossed $6 per gallon, reaching a record level.

GM President Mark Reuss acknowledged the pressure created by higher diesel prices but said the company views some of the current increase as linked to temporary geopolitical conditions.

GM is betting that diesel’s efficiency advantage will remain valuable over the longer term, even if fuel prices move sharply in the short term.

New V-8 Engines Also Planned

GM is not relying only on its diesel technology for the redesigned trucks.

The new Silverado and Sierra will also receive two new V-8 engines. They will be larger and more powerful than the outgoing versions while producing lower tailpipe emissions, according to the company.

The changes are part of GM’s broader effort to maintain its position in the highly competitive US pickup market.

Detroit Pickup Battle Intensifies

GM, Ford and Stellantis together account for more than 90% of sales in the US big-pickup market, making every improvement in fuel economy, towing and performance important.

GM’s diesel-focused strategy could appeal to buyers who value long-distance range and towing capability, while hybrid technology offers rivals another way to reduce fuel consumption.

The pickup market is therefore moving in several directions at once, with automakers balancing traditional engines, diesel technology, hybrids and other powertrain options.
