GKN Aerospace has marked a major milestone in military aviation by delivering the first upgraded RM12 engine for Sweden’s Gripen C/D fighter jets, signaling a critical leap in performance enhancement for one of Europe’s most reliable combat aircraft. This development is not just an upgrade—it represents a strategic effort to extend the operational relevance of the Gripen fleet in an era where performance, efficiency, and lifecycle costs are becoming decisive factors in air combat readiness.

At the heart of this upgrade lies a comprehensive enhancement of the engine’s core systems. The RM12 Enhanced Performance (RM12EP) configuration introduces improved turbine hardware alongside updated engine control software, enabling increased thrust and longer operating cycles. These improvements directly translate into better mission performance, allowing Gripen jets to operate more efficiently across extended missions while maintaining high levels of reliability under demanding conditions.

Beyond performance gains, the upgraded engine is designed to significantly reduce lifecycle costs—an increasingly important factor for modern air forces managing long-term fleet sustainability. By optimizing engine efficiency and durability, GKN Aerospace is helping to lower maintenance demands and operational expenses. This balance between power and cost efficiency positions the Gripen C/D as a competitive and economically viable platform even as newer fighter generations enter service.

The delivery of the upgraded RM12 engine is the result of a highly coordinated effort involving GKN Aerospace, Saab, and key industry partners. Developed and produced at GKN’s facility in Trollhättan, Sweden, the program reflects decades of collaboration between the company and the Swedish Armed Forces. This long-standing industrial partnership has played a crucial role in maintaining Sweden’s sovereign capabilities in fighter engine technology while ensuring consistent innovation within its defense ecosystem.

While the newer Gripen E variant is gradually entering service, the Gripen C/D fleet remains a vital component of Sweden’s air defense strategy. The RM12EP upgrade ensures that these aircraft continue to deliver high performance and operational reliability well into the future. By modernizing existing assets rather than replacing them outright, Sweden is adopting a pragmatic approach that maximizes return on investment while maintaining combat readiness.

The upgraded RM12 engine is not a standalone improvement but part of a broader long-term modernization strategy. Additional upgraded engines are expected to be delivered in phases, creating a standardized performance baseline across the fleet. This approach allows for continuous capability enhancement while ensuring that the Gripen platform remains adaptable to evolving mission requirements and technological advancements.

GKN Aerospace’s delivery of the upgraded RM12 engine underscores a key trend in the aerospace industry—enhancing existing platforms to meet future challenges. By combining improved thrust, extended endurance, and cost efficiency, the RM12EP upgrade transforms the Gripen C/D into a more capable and sustainable combat asset. As global defense forces increasingly focus on performance optimization and lifecycle value, such upgrades are proving essential in bridging the gap between legacy systems and next-generation warfare demands.
