FAA Plans Major Upgrade to Modernize U.S. Air Traffic Control Systems

Post by : Saif

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced a major plan to modernize the way air traffic controllers receive and handle flight information across the United States. The agency wants to replace its older systems with a single and modern data platform that will help manage the movement of aircraft more efficiently. This decision is part of a larger national effort to improve the country’s aviation infrastructure, which has struggled in recent years due to aging technology.

In July, Congress approved $12.5 billion to upgrade the country’s air traffic systems and address problems such as airport congestion and flight delays. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also asked Congress for an additional $19 billion to support further modernization. Officials have admitted that some FAA equipment has become so outdated that parts are no longer available from manufacturers, leading the agency to purchase replacements from online sellers like eBay. A government report also found that over one-third of FAA telecommunications systems are already unsustainable and need urgent upgrades.

Currently, the FAA uses two separate systems. The ERAM system tracks high-altitude flights between airports, while the STARS system manages flights near airports, including departures, landings, weather alerts, and instructions that keep aircraft safely separated. Having two different systems makes the workflow slower, more complicated, and harder to maintain. The FAA now wants to merge these functions into one modern data platform called the Common Automation Platform. This single setup is expected to help controllers access the same information faster and improve coordination across different facilities.

Two major companies are competing to lead this massive project. Peraton, a national security company, and Parsons, which has teamed up with IBM, are both trying to secure the contract. A final decision has not yet been announced, and Secretary Duffy has said he and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford will need to meet with President Donald Trump before selecting the winner.

Upgrading the air traffic system has become increasingly important as airline travel continues to grow. Technical issues in recent years have caused serious disruptions, especially during peak travel seasons, leading to crowded airports and frustrated passengers. The FAA has also requested new runway lighting and other improvements to support safer airport operations and smoother traffic flow.

The modernization project aims to reduce delays, improve communication, support better flight tracking, and provide faster and more reliable service to travelers across the country. Although the introduction date for the new system has not been confirmed, planning and early decision-making have already begun. This could become one of the largest and most important upgrades in the history of U.S. aviation, marking a major step toward safer skies and a more modern air travel network for millions of passengers.
