Bentley has entered the electric vehicle market with its first fully electric model, the Torcal SUV, as the British luxury carmaker tests whether wealthy customers are ready to move toward zero-emission driving without giving up the brand's traditional design and luxury.
The Torcal starts at £173,000, placing it toward the lower end of Bentley's current vehicle range. The company hopes the model will attract both existing Bentley owners and new customers interested in electric luxury cars.
Bentley has designed the Torcal to look closely connected to its existing combustion-engine vehicles.
The SUV features diamond-shaped lights inspired by the traditional Bentley grille. Although an electric vehicle does not need a conventional grille for engine cooling, the design element helps maintain the visual identity associated with the brand.
Bentley has also tried to recreate some of the emotional experience traditionally associated with powerful petrol engines. The Torcal uses an artificial engine soundtrack based on orchestral timpani, with additional drums becoming faster as the vehicle accelerates.
Bentley CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser said the company's goal was to create a Bentley first rather than make an electric vehicle that looked completely different from the rest of the lineup.
The new electric SUV is positioned below some of the most expensive electric vehicles from rival ultra-luxury brands.
Ferrari's first electric model, the Luce, starts at about €550,000, while Bentley's Torcal has a starting price of £173,000.
Walliser described the Torcal as a more accessible Bentley that could help the company reach new markets.
Bentley said it has already shown the vehicle to existing and potential customers. Interest has come from Europe, the Middle East and parts of the United States where electric vehicle adoption is relatively high.
The company plans to begin a launch campaign in China next year.
Bentley said interest in the Torcal is coming from both existing owners and people who have not previously owned a Bentley.
According to Walliser, about half of the interest has come from current Bentley customers who are considering adding an electric vehicle or replacing another car in their collection. The other half has come from potential customers who are new to the brand.
This mix could be important for Bentley as it tries to expand its electric vehicle business while maintaining its position in the luxury market.

Bentley has invested £350 million in its manufacturing plant in Crewe, northwest England, to prepare the facility to produce the Torcal.
The investment comes as several major automakers continue to adjust their electric vehicle strategies in response to changing customer demand.
Bentley had previously planned to launch its first EV in 2025 before delaying the project to 2026. The company also dropped an earlier target of becoming fully electric by 2030, saying customers were not yet ready for a complete shift away from combustion engines.
Bentley's decision comes as other high-end carmakers take different approaches to electric vehicles.
Ferrari has already launched its first EV, while Rolls-Royce is also selling an electric model. Lamborghini, another Volkswagen Group brand, has delayed its first fully electric vehicle until later in the decade.
McLaren has said it currently has no plans to launch a fully electric vehicle, pointing to limited customer demand.
These different strategies show that luxury automakers are balancing the push toward lower-emission vehicles with customer expectations around performance, design, driving experience and brand identity.
British Business Minister Jonathan Reynolds welcomed Bentley's investment in its Crewe facility.
The announcement also comes during a period of increased investment by carmakers in British manufacturing.
McLaren recently announced a £500 million investment in Britain, while Nissan said it would invest £170 million to produce a new hybrid SUV at its UK plant.
