Meta's Charm Gadget Shows Zuckerberg's Bigger AI Ambitions

Meta is taking its artificial intelligence strategy beyond smartphones and smart glasses with Muse Charm, a small pocket-sized device designed to give users direct access to the company's Muse AI agent.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced the gadget at Meta Connect in Menlo Park, California, on September 23. The device reflects Meta's growing focus on what Zuckerberg calls “personal superintelligence” and its effort to build technology that can operate outside Apple's and Google's smartphone platforms.

Muse Charm Puts AI in a Small Device

Muse Charm has a roughly 2-inch screen and a built-in 5G modem. Users can interact with the device through its small display and tap it to access Muse directly.

The 5G connection allows the gadget to use Muse without relying on Wi-Fi. However, the device cannot make phone calls.

A customizable Muse character sits at the center of the display, giving the product a companion-style design rather than the appearance of a traditional smartphone or computer.

Meta also plans to bring Muse to its smart glasses, expanding access to the AI assistant across more of the company's hardware products.

Zuckerberg Shifts Focus Toward Personal AI

Zuckerberg's comments at Meta Connect show a change in Meta's long-term technology strategy.

The company previously placed major expectations on the metaverse, an immersive digital environment that led Meta to change its corporate name in 2021. Zuckerberg now says personal AI has become a more immediate and potentially larger opportunity.

Meta sees AI assistants as a way to help people handle everyday tasks and interact with technology more naturally.

Muse has already attracted millions of downloads, creating significant attention around Meta's AI strategy. The system is designed to automate tasks such as making travel arrangements and handling other online activities.

Meta Wants More Control Over Its AI Platform

Muse Charm also fits into Meta's wider effort to reduce its dependence on Apple's and Google's mobile operating systems.

By giving users direct access to Muse through a dedicated device, Meta can create another route between consumers and its AI technology.

That strategy could become increasingly important as technology companies compete to control the next generation of AI-based personal computing.

Meta has already expanded into smart glasses, and bringing Muse to those products could help the company build a wider hardware ecosystem around its AI assistant.

Gen Z Could Be an Important Audience

Analysts say Muse Charm could appeal to younger consumers, particularly Gen Z users who are comfortable treating AI tools as companions, creative partners and brainstorming assistants.

The device's small size and customizable character could also connect with renewed interest in older consumer technology such as digital cameras, flip phones and MP3 players.

Its design has been compared with the virtual-pet trend that became popular in the late 1990s.

The combination of AI, personalization and fashion could attract younger buyers if Meta keeps the device affordable and simple to operate, analysts said.

Mass-Market Demand Remains Uncertain

Despite the attention around Muse, the success of Charm is not guaranteed.

The consumer technology market has seen several AI-focused hardware products struggle after strong initial interest. Rabbit's R1, launched in 2024, attracted attention but faced criticism over unreliable performance and unmet expectations.

That history could make consumers cautious about purchasing another dedicated AI device when smartphones, watches, earbuds and smart glasses already provide access to digital assistants.

Analysts therefore see a key challenge for Meta: Muse Charm will need to offer functions that existing devices cannot easily replace if it is to move beyond early adopters.

Meta's Bigger AI Hardware Strategy

Muse Charm represents more than another gadget for Meta. It is part of Zuckerberg's wider plan to make AI a central part of the company's hardware business.

The company is building an ecosystem in which users could interact with Muse through dedicated devices, smart glasses and other products.

Whether consumers will want a separate AI gadget remains an open question. For Meta, however, the launch shows that personal AI is becoming a major part of its strategy as the company looks for the next platform beyond traditional smartphones.
