Air Cambodia’s Boeing Deal Signals New Chapter in US–Cambodia Relations

Post by : Saif

Cambodia’s national airline, Air Cambodia, has announced a major aircraft deal with American plane maker Boeing. The airline will buy 10 Boeing 737 MAX jets, with the option to purchase 10 more in the future. The announcement was made publicly at the Singapore Airshow, an important global aviation event.

The agreement was completed in December but was officially revealed this week in front of senior officials and diplomats from both Cambodia and the United States. Boeing confirmed that the order includes firm purchases for 10 aircraft, while leaving room for future expansion if Air Cambodia decides to grow its fleet further.

Cambodian Civil Aviation Minister Mao Havannall said the deal sends a strong and positive message about the growing cooperation between the two countries. According to him, this agreement is not just about planes, but also about trust and long-term partnership.

The aircraft purchase is closely linked to broader trade talks between Cambodia and the United States. Last year, Cambodia faced the possibility of high US tariffs on its exports. Through negotiations, these tariffs were reduced significantly. The jet deal was part of those wider discussions, showing how trade and diplomacy often move together.

Relations between Cambodia and the United States have improved in recent months. After a period of tension over human rights and political issues, both sides have taken steps to rebuild ties. The two countries have now completed a trade agreement, and Cambodia has publicly praised the role of US President Donald Trump in helping to prevent a conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. Cambodia even nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize and later agreed to join an international peace board linked to his administration.

For Boeing, this order adds to a strong year. The US government reported that American companies signed a record number of foreign contracts in 2025, helped by official support. Boeing was a major contributor to this growth, with a sharp rise in aircraft orders from airlines around the world.

Air Cambodia has mainly operated European-made aircraft in the past. This deal marks a shift in its strategy and signals confidence in Boeing’s latest generation of planes. The 737 MAX jets are known for better fuel efficiency and longer range, which could help the airline expand regional routes and reduce operating costs.

Overall, the agreement reflects more than a business decision. It shows how aviation, trade, and diplomacy are coming together to shape a new phase in US–Cambodia relations, with benefits expected for both economies in the years ahead.
