Wizz Air, the Hungarian low-cost airline, said on Thursday that it will not start regular scheduled flights between the United Kingdom and the United States. Instead, the airline plans to operate special transatlantic flights for sports teams and other specific events.
Earlier this month, Wizz Air applied for permission to fly between the UK and the US. The approval would allow the airline to transport teams to major sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup or the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
“These flights will be on an ad hoc basis,” Wizz Air Chief Executive Jozsef Varadi told Reuters. He clarified that the airline has no plans to run permanent transatlantic routes at this time.
The airline’s move comes as low-cost carriers explore new opportunities beyond Europe. Wizz Air has built a strong network within the continent, and sports events present a chance to expand internationally without committing to regular flights that may not be profitable.
Ad hoc flights are typically organized for a specific purpose, date, and group of passengers, such as national teams or fans traveling for international tournaments. This strategy allows airlines to test international markets while managing operational risks.
While the airline focuses on these temporary services, Wizz Air continues to expand its European operations. It has been increasing routes to holiday destinations and major European cities, catering to both leisure travelers and business passengers.
The airline’s decision also reflects the competitive nature of transatlantic flights. Established carriers like British Airways, United Airlines, and Delta already dominate regular UK-US travel. Entering this market with scheduled services would require significant investment in planes, crew, and marketing.
For sports fans, Wizz Air’s new services could offer a cost-effective way to follow international tournaments. Airlines have increasingly used this approach to tap into niche markets without committing to full-scale operations.
In summary, Wizz Air’s transatlantic flights will serve a specific purpose rather than a continuous schedule. This move demonstrates the airline’s flexible approach to international growth while avoiding the challenges of entering a crowded long-haul market.
