Volvo Launches Longer-Range Hybrid XC60 and XC90 SUVs

Volvo Cars has launched new hybrid versions of its XC60 and XC90 SUVs with significantly longer electric driving ranges for European and American markets. The Swedish automaker said the new variants can travel more than two and a half times farther on electric power than the existing versions.

The improvement comes from a larger-capacity battery and a more powerful electric motor. Volvo described the new long-range hybrids as an important step toward its longer-term move to fully electric vehicles.

XC60 and XC90 Get Higher Electric Range

The new hybrid XC60 can travel up to 200 kilometres on electric power per charge, while the updated XC90 offers up to 160 kilometres, according to Volvo. Both figures represent substantial increases over the existing hybrid versions.

The two SUVs will continue to be available with mild-hybrid powertrains, giving customers different electrified options depending on their driving needs.

Hybrid Models Support Volvo’s EV Strategy

Volvo is positioning the longer-range plug-in hybrids as a bridge toward an all-electric vehicle lineup. The company already offers fully electric models, including the EX60 and EX90, alongside its hybrid vehicles.

Longer electric range could allow drivers to complete more daily journeys using electric power while retaining the flexibility of a combustion engine for longer trips.

Focus on Europe and the United States

The new XC60 and XC90 variants are aimed at customers in European and American markets. Volvo’s move comes as automakers continue to balance demand for fully electric vehicles with consumer interest in hybrid models.

Production of the long-range plug-in hybrid versions is expected to begin later in the autumn.

The launch gives Volvo another way to expand its electrified vehicle lineup while the company continues developing its fully electric range.
