Morrisons reported stronger underlying sales growth in its third quarter, as the UK supermarket chain focused on improving prices amid intense competition in the grocery market.
Like-for-like sales increased 3.2% during the 13 weeks to July 26, compared with growth of 2.2% in the previous quarter. Total sales for the period reached £4.1 billion, or around $5.5 billion.
The improvement reflects Morrisons' efforts to make its prices more competitive as major UK supermarkets continue to compete for customers.
Morrisons said its performance benefited from a push to sharpen prices across its stores. Price competition remains a key feature of the UK grocery sector, with supermarkets seeking to attract shoppers who are closely watching household spending.
Lower or more competitive prices can help retailers increase customer visits and sales volumes, although they can also put pressure on profit margins.
Morrisons is the UK's sixth-largest supermarket group and is owned by US private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice.
The company's latest figures show an improvement from the previous quarter, when like-for-like sales increased 2.2%. The 3.2% rise in the latest quarter indicates stronger sales momentum across the business.

The company will face continued pressure to maintain sales growth while balancing competitive pricing with profitability. Its latest results highlight how pricing remains an important part of the battle for customers in Britain's grocery market.
