Maruti Suzuki Rethinks Strategy as Indian Buyers Shift From Budget Cars to Premium Features

Post by : Saif

Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, is reshaping its business strategy as changing consumer preferences reduce demand for basic budget cars and increase interest in premium features, SUVs, and advanced vehicle technology.

For decades, the company dominated India's passenger vehicle market by offering affordable, fuel-efficient hatchbacks. However, rising incomes and evolving customer expectations have changed buying patterns, leading to increased competition from domestic automakers.

Demand Grows for Premium Features

Indian consumers are increasingly choosing vehicles equipped with features such as sunroofs, larger infotainment systems, connected technology, advanced safety equipment, and sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

Industry analysts say Maruti Suzuki was slower than some competitors in introducing these features, focusing instead on affordability and low ownership costs. The company added sunroofs to its lineup in 2022 after the feature had already become popular among Indian buyers.

Competition Intensifies in India's Auto Market

Domestic manufacturers such as Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have strengthened their presence by expanding their SUV portfolios and introducing feature-rich vehicles that appeal to younger customers.

As a result, Maruti Suzuki's market share has declined to around 39%, while competitors continue to gain ground in India's rapidly growing passenger vehicle market.

Company Increases Investment in Innovation

To strengthen its position, Maruti Suzuki is increasing investment in research and development, expanding its SUV lineup, and giving greater decision-making authority to its Indian management team.

The company says it remains committed to affordable mobility while also responding to changing customer expectations for technology, design, comfort, and safety.

Future Growth Strategy Focuses on Indian Buyers

Maruti Suzuki aims to regain market share by developing products that better reflect the preferences of Indian consumers. The company continues to target long-term growth through new vehicle launches, expanded product offerings, and enhanced customer experience while maintaining its reputation for reliability and fuel efficiency.
