Two Ireland-based aircraft leasing companies have approached India's aviation regulator seeking the deregistration of four Boeing 737 MAX aircraft currently leased to SpiceJet, according to an official document released on Monday.
The development comes as the airline continues to manage its fleet operations amid ongoing financial and operational challenges.
Request Filed With Aviation Regulator
The deregistration request has been submitted to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's civil aviation regulator.
According to the official document, the request covers four Boeing 737 MAX aircraft leased to SpiceJet by two Irish lessors. Deregistration is a legal process that allows aircraft owners or leasing companies to reclaim leased aircraft under applicable aviation regulations.
Neither the leasing companies nor the regulator has publicly disclosed further details regarding the request.
SpiceJet Yet to Respond
SpiceJet had not issued an official statement on the deregistration request at the time of publication.
The airline has been working to strengthen its operations by restoring grounded aircraft, expanding flight services and improving financial stability.
Industry observers will closely monitor the matter, as any change in fleet availability could influence the airline's operational capacity.
Importance of Aircraft Leasing
Aircraft leasing plays a crucial role in the aviation industry, enabling airlines to expand or modernise fleets without purchasing aircraft outright.
When lease agreements face disputes or financial obligations remain unresolved, lessors may seek deregistration and repossession of aircraft through aviation authorities.
Such actions are governed by international aviation agreements and domestic regulatory procedures.
DGCA to Review the Application
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is expected to examine the applications in accordance with India's aviation regulations before taking any decision.
The outcome could affect the future deployment of the four aircraft and will be closely watched by the aviation industry, leasing companies and airline stakeholders.
