India's largest airline, IndiGo, reported a first-quarter loss after a sharp rise in jet fuel prices and operating expenses offset strong revenue growth during the April–June quarter.
The airline said higher fuel costs, driven by the Iran conflict and rising crude oil prices, significantly impacted its financial performance.
For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, IndiGo posted a net loss of ₹3.82 billion ($39.6 million), compared with a profit of ₹21.61 billion during the same period last year.
The results reflect mounting cost pressures despite continued demand for air travel.
The airline reported that aircraft fuel expenses increased by nearly 86% year-on-year to ₹108.3 billion, making fuel the biggest contributor to rising operating costs.
Jet fuel prices climbed sharply after the Iran conflict pushed global crude oil prices above $100 per barrel during the quarter.
Unlike some international carriers, IndiGo does not currently hedge its fuel purchases, leaving it more exposed to sudden increases in fuel prices.

Despite reporting a loss, IndiGo's quarterly revenue rose 20% to ₹245.84 billion, reflecting strong passenger demand and continued growth in domestic and international operations.
However, total operating expenses increased even faster, rising 35.1% during the quarter, which outweighed the gains in revenue.
The airline also noted that more than 60% of its operating costs are directly or indirectly linked to the US dollar.
A weaker Indian rupee further increased expenses by raising the cost of aircraft leases, maintenance and other dollar-denominated payments.
IndiGo said it is exploring the possibility of introducing fuel hedging, a strategy that allows airlines to lock in fuel prices through financial contracts and reduce exposure to future price volatility.
The move could help improve cost stability if global fuel prices remain elevated.
